STRASBOURG - Spanish conservative Jose Maria Gil-Robles Gil Delgado was
elected president of the European Parliament on Tuesday and told immediately
to change the system which got him there.
[02] Madcow inquiry committee
STRASBOURG - A probe into the handling of the mad cow crisis comes to a head
this week as the European Parliament prepares to claim that Britain and the
European Commission mishandled the affair.
[03] BA/American deal still on track
LONDON - British Airways remained optimistic on Tuesday that its proposed
alliance with American Airlines would take off this summer despite the threat
of a clash with the European Commission.
[04] EU/KLM/Northwest deal data
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is due on Wednesday to threaten Dutch
airline KLM and possibly its American partner Northwest Airlines with daily
fines if they do not provide it with data on their alliance, a European
Commission official told Reuters.
[05] Court/Spain/Commission aid decision
LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice dismissed on Thursday a challenge
from Spain to the European Commission's decision that aid given to the Pieas y
Rodajes steel foundry in Spain was illegal.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice said on Tuesday the Bank of England
should release funds to Centro-Com of Italy to pay for medical goods shipped
from Italy to Serbia and Montenegro.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice said on Tuesday traders who paid
illegal customs fees in the form of dock dues may recover those payments from
member states, unless such recovery would amount to unjust enrichment.
[08] Stinnes coal unit buy cleared
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said in a statement on Tuesday it had
cleared the control by Rheinbraun Brennstoff GmbH and SHV Energy NV of the
hard coal trading activities of Stinnes AG.
[09] EU farm budget underspent in 1996
BRUSSELS - The European Union's farm budget was underspent last year despite
the cost of the mad cow crisis which was funded without drawing on the special
198-million-Ecu BSE reserve fund, the European Commission said on Tuesday.
[10] Commission's fur ban compromise
BRUSSELS - EU member states have rejected a European Commission plan for a
compromise with Canada, Russia and the United States on rules for animal
traps, a Commission source said on Tuesday.
[11] S.Africa/EU meeting
JOHANNESBURG - South African and European Union negotiators will meet next
week to resume stalled trade talks which Pretoria hopes will give it easier
access to EU markets, the Department of Trade and Industry said on Tuesday.

STRASBOURG - European Parliament plenary session begins at 0800 GMT (third of
five days); Irish Prime Minister John Bruton and European Commission President
Santer give statements on the Dublin European Council at 0900 GMT; Dutch

presidency at 1400 GMT.
