    BRUSSELS - Britain's forthcoming general election and questions about the European stance of a new government in London have forced the European Union to prepare for a delay in its treaty negotiations.

    BRUSSELS - Further beef battles are looming during the first half of 1997 as member states fight over long- term reforms to deal with the mad cow crisis and Britain strives to ease a worldwide beef ban, Dutch and EU officials said.

    BRUSSELS - The chairman of Credit Lyonnais, Jean Peyrelevade, and Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert met on Monday to discuss the bank's latest rescue plan, Commission sources said.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is investigating whether the sale of Creditanstalt, Austria's second-largest bank, to the country's market leader Bank Austria involves public subsidies, a Commission spokesman said on Monday.

    LISBON - European Union attempts to mediate peace in the Middle East are unlikely to clash with U.S. efforts as both sides of the Atlantic are cooperating closely, Dutch Foreign Minister Hans Van Mierlo said on Monday.

    [06] EU doubts on BA/American deal

    BRUSSELS - European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert says in a letter to the British Department of Trade and Industry that the alliance between British Airways and American Airlines as it stands would strengthen their dominant position on some transatlantic markets, an EU source said on Monday.

    LONDON - Britain declined to comment on Monday on a warning by Competition Commissioner Karel van Miert not to clash with the European Commission in ruling on British Airways' planned alliance with American Airlines.

    BRUSSELS - Japanese Trade Minister Shinji Sato arrived in Belgium on Monday for "getting-to-know-you" talks with the European Commission, officials said.

    BRUSSELS - A high-level industry advisory group is expected to urge the European Union to promote the "information society" by taking action in areas including telecommunications, electronic commerce and standardisation.

    RIGA - Norwegian Foreign Minister Bjoern Tore Godal said on Monday the European Union should start membership talks with all three Baltic states at the same time, rejecting a German suggestion that Estonia may be ready first.

    AMSTERDAM - The European Union said on Monday it was "extremely concerned" about the current state of instability in the Central African Republic and hoped to see all parties agree to a peaceful solution to the country's crisis.
