BRUSSELS - The European Union's monetary committee ended a two-day meeting on
Wednesday making little headway on the details of a budget stability pact for
countries forming a monetary union, sources said.
[02] Italy to seek ERM lira re-entry
ROME - Italian Treasury Minister Carlo Azeglio Ciampi said on Wednesday that
Italy was likely to seek a re-entry of the lira into the Exchange Rate
Mechanism at the end of the month.
[03] Most EU states not ready for Euro
FRANKFURT - The European Monetary Institute on Wednesday said EU states were
dragging their heels on getting their public finances in order for the planned
1999 launch of the Euro, and said most currently did not make the grade for
monetary union.
[04] EU sees faster 97 growth
BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Wednesday painted a rosy outlook for
economic growth in 1997 and saw a vast majority of 12 nations in the European
Union meeting the tests for a single currency.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission postponed on Wednesday an orientation
debate on whether the European Union should continue to subsidise tobacco
farmers.

BRUSSELS - European Commission President Jacques Santer on Wednesday
congratulated U.S. President Bill Clinton on his re-election and said he
believed good relations between Europe and America would continue.

BRUSSELS - The German authorities have asked the EU if they can give Bremer
Vulkan's <BVUG.F>two former eastern shipyards almost one billion marks,
European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert warned on Wednesday that
time was running out to solve a crisis triggered by the illegal payment of
subsidies to Volkswagen AG.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission still has problems with the planned merger
between Finnish wholesaler and retailer Kesko and its rival Tuko, despite last
week's divestment offer, European Union sources said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert is to propose
that the European Commission block Cablevision, the Spanish cable television
deal between Telefonica de Espana and Canal Plus, a European Union source
said.
[11] Ministers to discuss Zaire crisis
BRUSSELS - European Union development ministers meet in Brussels on Thursday
to discuss aid for refugees scattered across eastern Zaire, but will avoid
serious discussion on whether to intervene militarily to deliver it.
[12] Strong Zaire aid force proposed
MADRID - Spain and France want to send a multinational force of at least 5,000
troops in a relief effort to open humanitarian corridors for a million
starving refugees in Zaire, a foreign ministry spokesman said. In KINSHASA,
Zaire said on Wednesday it was asking aid agencies not to use its soil to
distribute food for more than a million stranded refugees from Rwanda and
Burundi.

BRUSSELS - Ten years of EU efforts to bridge the gap between its richest and
poorest citizens have shown mixed success, with improvements at national level
contrasting with growing wealth gaps at regional and local levels, following a
European Commission regional aid report released on Wednesday.

DUBLIN - The European Union welcomed presidential and parliamentary elections
due to take place in Ghana on December 7 and said it would provide a number of
observers to monitor them.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - Top European Union and Swiss officials said on
Wednesday they hoped to wind up tricky negotiations on transport and free
movement of people in the coming months.
