BRUSSELS - The European Union, accustomed to taking an ever larger bite out of
taxpayers' pockets, bowed to the realities of the marketplace on Thursday by
agreeing to an unprecedented freeze on expenditure for 1997.
[02] Compensation for farm budget cuts
BRUSSELS - The decision to slice one billion Ecus off EU farm spending could
reinforce demands for cuts in compensatory payments particularly in the
cereals sector, an EU official said on Friday.

BASLE, Switzerland - Ciba-Geigy AG said on Friday it agreed with a European
Commission decision to consult three scientific committees on whether to
approve Ciba's genetically modified maize.

BRUSSELS - Fearful of missing out on any semiconductor trade deal, the
European Union will send its chief negotiator to Canada this week to monitor
talks between the U.S and Japan on the future of their computer chip
agreement.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission signed the death warrant for duty-free
sales in the European Union on Friday which airports say provide vital revenue
but consumer organisations say are often a rip-off.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission had no comment on Friday on the
announcement that French state bank Credit des Depots et Consignations will
rescue loss-making Credit Foncier de France.
[07] EU probes Finnish Kesko-Tuko deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had started a full probe
into the acquisition by Finnish wholesaler Kesko Oy of a majority shareholding
in rival wholesaler Tuko Oy.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared a joint
venture called Cofresco GmbH between Melitta Bentz KG and Dow Chemical
subsidiary Dow Europe in the households packaging products field.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission expressed thinly disguised disappointment
to Turkey on Friday over its human rights record and urged Ankara to do
everything in its power to end a "death fast" that has claimed seven lives.
[10] Turkey-EU sign steel duties pact
ANKARA - Turkey and the European Union have signed a pact to abolish customs
duties on iron and steel products, the foreign trade secretariat said on
Friday.

SOFIA - Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler told a news conference on Sunday that
the European Commission will help Bulgaria overcome its current acute wheat
shortage and forestall foot-and-mouth disease spreading from herds in several
neighbouring countries.

DUBLIN - The European Union said on Friday that the main priority in Burundi
was to avoid any further loss of life and it urged all sides to resolve the
crisis by exclusively peaceful means.
[13] EU could end Mostar mission
DUBLIN - The EU said on Friday it would end its presence in the Bosnian city
of Mostar and reconsider its future attitude towards the local Croats unless
they lifted their boycott of a newly elected city assembly by August 4.
