    BRUSSELS - European Union budget ministers struck an accord late on Thursday which would slash 2.5 billion Ecu from the EU's 1997 budget, preventing for the first time a real increase in annual spending, diplomats said.

    BRUSSELS - The European Union farm budget is facing a one-billion-Ecu cut if European Union budget ministers agree to lop up to nine billion Ecus off 1997 EU spending, a European Commission spokesman said on Thursday.

    BRUSSELS - Poorer European Union states on Thursday resisted a controversial plan pushed by founder-members France and Germany that would slash 1997 expenditure and prevent for the first time a real increase in annual spending.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is set to adopt a report on Friday saying that duty-free sales in the European Union should be abolished in 1999 despite strong lobbying from the industry and airports.

    PARIS - France, Italy and Spain pledged on Thursday to boost judicial cooperation against cross-border crime, setting up a network of investigating magistrates to fight terrorism, organised crime and illegal immigration.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it intended to clear the Interbank On-Line System operated by Royal Bank of Scotland Plc, Banco Santander, ING Bank NV and Credit Commercial de France among others.

    BRUSSELS - The ownership structure of the Saint-Louis Group has not changed since 1994 and the EU's approval of the acquisition by Italy's IFIL of a stake in the company is only routine, Saint-Louis's other main parent Worms & Co said on Thursday.

    [11] Shipbuilding aid rules

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission has put forward a proposal which would make it possible to extend current rules on shipbuilding aid until the end of 1998 if an international agreement on eliminating most state support has not come into force before then.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission has asked its handful of staff in Burundi to leave, but the EU's charge d'affaires in Bujumburu will remain.

    TIRANA - European Commissioner Hans Van den Broek arrived in Tirana on Thursday for two days of talks focusing on the political situation in Albania and ways of improving ties with the European Union.
