    ROME - Italy, the European Union's current president, said in a statement on Sunday it was seeking an early end to the row over mad cow disease in Britain which has dominated its six-month presidency term.

    [02] Britain disrupts EU business

    BRUSSELS - Britain's campaign to disrupt European Union business moved from internal to foreign affairs on Monday as London refused to sign off on routine diplomatic statements issued by the bloc. It could also block several measures when the Internal Market and Development Councils meet on Tuesday, diplomats said .

    [03] Fischler hits at British blocking

    VIENNA - Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler criticised British attempts to block EU business in a newspaper interview on Friday, and said a ban on British beef exports would remain until London took adequate steps to combat mad cow disease.

    [04] Ireland calls for beef solidarity

    DUBLIN - Ireland's foreign minister and deputy prime minister, Dick Spring, said on Friday the European Union must show solidarity towards Britain in the current beef crisis. Spring said one of the top priorities facing Ireland, which takes on the EU presidency in July, was the crisis sparked by the BSE scare.

    [05] Brits blame government over beef

    LONDON - A newspaper opinion poll on Sunday said most British voters blamed the government rather than the European Union for the crisis caused by the mad cow disease scare.

    [06] Agreement on Mostar elections

    SARAJEVO - Moslem, Croat and Serb representatives averted disaster in the divided city of Mostar on Saturday by signing a final agreement with the city's EU administrator to hold local elections next month. A text of the agreement calls for the poll not later than June 30th.

    [07] Major sees long-term Bosnia role

    LONDON - British Prime Minister John Major said in a radio interview on Saturday he saw long-term tasks for the international community in Bosnia and it was too early to judge whether British troops would pull out by a December deadline.

    [08] Dini optimistic on Slovenia deal

    ROME - Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini said on Saturday that Italy, which has blocked Slovenia's European Union associate membership, hoped the issue could be resolved by the end of its EU presidency next month.

    TIRANA - European observers and delegates from a European security forum said on Monday they had seen many irregularities in Albania's claimed victory.

    [10] Juncker backs Belgian EMU entry

    BRUSSELS - Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker threw his full support behind Belgium on Saturday in the race towards European monetary union, saying in a newspaper interview that his neighbour must be part of the single currency from day one.

    [11] EU dismay over maritime talks

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it was dismayed by reports that the U.S. was pulling out of negotiations to liberalise trade in maritime services, saying such action was "damaging and premature".

    [12] EU to vet CLT merger in July

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission expects to be notified in July of a proposal to merge German media giant Bertelsmann AG's UFA unit and Luxembourg broadcaster CLT, a Commission spokesman said on Friday. The deal, which would also give Bertelsmann a stake in CLT, was announced at the beginning of April.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission has amended rules governing veterinary inspections in European Union member states, according to a document released on Friday.

    [14] EU clears Ford's Mazda stake

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission has cleared a proposal by Ford to increase its stake in Mazda to 33.4 percent from 24.5 percent, a Ford spokeswoman said on Friday.

    [15] NATO denies Karadzic deals

    MADRID - NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana on Friday denied a press report that the United States and its allies would consider allowing two Bosnian Serb leaders indicted for war crimes to stay in power. "There is no agreement with war criminals, nor can there be," Solana told reporters in Madrid.

    STRASBOURG - European countries should adopt legal and administrative measures to ensure women and men play a more equal role in economic, political and cultural decision-making, the European Parliament said in a report adopted on Friday.

    STRASBOURG - The European Parliament called on Friday for "a new international framework for competition" which would oblige multilateral companies to behave "in an environmentally acceptable fashion".

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission has received a complaint from U.S. card company Diners Club over plans by Visa International to ban its European bank members from issuing competitors' cards, a Commission official said on Friday.
