[01] Britain begins policy blocking
BRUSSELS - Britain blocked on Thursday its first European Union proposals at
ministerial level since adopting a policy of non-cooperation with the 15-
nation bloc in the row over mad cow disease.
[02] IGC and British beef ban
BONN - British Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind vowed on Thursday that London
would block any progress at the inter-governmental conference until a ban on
British beef exports was lifted.
[03] Court and member states
LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice ruled on Thursday that one member
state does not have the authority to decide that another member state is not
in compliance with Community rules.
[04] Toro Assicurazioni/Nuova Tirrena
BRUSSELS - The European Commission has cleared the acquisition by Italian
insurance firm Toro Assicurazioni SpA, a subsidiary of the Fiat group, of
Nuova Tirrena SpA, another Italian insurer, a European Union source said.
[05] EU's pay TV deal worries ease
BRUSSELS - The European Commission no longer has problems with a digital pay
television deal between Deutsche Telekom AG, Bertelsmann AG and CLT, despite
saying earlier that it would have to vet the deal, Commission officials said
on Thursday.
[06] Novel foods conciliation
BRUSSELS - EU member states were meeting at working group level on Thursday in
a bid to avoid a clash with the European Parliament over the draft regulation
on novel foods.
