[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkish official warns Turkish Cypriots to lose rights if Cyprus joins EUHALKIN SESI (21.06.02) reports that the Turkish Foreign Ministry Cyprus Department General Director Ertugrul Apakan has said that Turkey had to be very careful because the Turkish Cypriots will lose their rights granted by the agreements if Cyprus joins the EU.During a briefing at Parliament Foreign Affairs Commission on Cyprus, Apakan told deputies about the history of the Cyprus conflict. The meeting was a closed-door session. ``The Greek Cypriot side doesn`t want to accept the sovereignty of the Turkish Cypriots. They deny that there are two communities living on the island. They want our kinsmen to live as a minority under their autonomy,`` he alleged. He also remarked that Cyprus government was insisting on keeping their current position with the support of the Western world. When asked to comment on the ongoing talks between Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas and President Glafcos Clerides, Apakan said: ``The visit of UN Secretary Kofi Annan to Cyprus was important. Greek Cypriots didn`t agree with the statements of Annan. They weren`t happy when Annan said there were two communities on the island and their rights should be taken under guarantee. They didn`t support this statement.`` Apakan said that the Cyprus government believes that 24 percent of land was enough for the Turkish Cypriot community and they denied the pseudostate/s sovereignty. ``The Turkish Cypriot side will have to give up their rights granted by 59-60 agreements. We have to be very careful. Greek Cypriots will not be satisfied with EU membership, later they will bring up the Aegean issue,`` he claimed. [02] Tansu Ciller: If Cyprus becomes an EU member, Turkish army in the pseudostate could be assumed as occupierAccording to Ankara Anatolia (20.06.02) the leader of True Path Party (TPP) Tansu Ciller on Thursday visited Parliament Speaker Omer Izgi and called on support from him to discuss the issue of the European Union (EU) as a whole in the Parliament.Pointing out that Turkey`s locking itself on death sentence on the way to EU was not right, Ciller reiterated that Cyprus question should be solved first of all. She said the EU process would be endangered in case Cyprus issue blocks the road for Turkey. Ciller requested Izgi to keep parliament open on the way to EU, stressing that they wanted the government to brief the Parliament about those decisions made on the EU, mainly on Cyprus issue. About the cancellation of her meeting with Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Ciller said ``it has been confirmed one more time that there is no Prime Minister in Turkey and the government was living the last days of its life. `` ``People know our clear position regarding the EU. We of course would like to help the government but the government has to show its will. Today Turkey has no head and there is a government vacuum,`` she commented. Ciller said: ``In this case, nobody should deceive or mislead Turkey regarding a national target with the EU. Statements in Turkey like `if Turkey settles issues like death sentence and head of terrorist organization, it can settle EU issue. Those who do not accept this are against the EU` are also denied by the EU officials. Nobody should deceive Turkey and Turkish people.`` If Cyprus became an EU member till the end of this year, Turkish army "TRNC" would be assumed as occupier, Ciller said. She noted that nobody should consent to this.
