[01] Turkish foreign minister extends full support to Denktas

According to NTV (19/06/02), the Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem in an interview to the NTV correspondent referred to the Cyprus problem and the on going direct talks, and said that as Turkey they fully support the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas. Cem said: ''Denktas is not negotiating only with the Greek Cypriot side. In fact esteemed Denktas is carrying on this negotiation with the UN, EU, USA and others. He is realising an extraordinary thing. And of course we are fully supporting him .I think there is a possibility. This will be like two states, I want to use the right word. There will be two sovereign entities (Tr. note:Cem used the term ' Sovereign entity'' in his statement)and from these sovereign entities there will be a third partnership state and this partnership state will have international identity as agreed in the partnership agreement. These are very important things and we are defending this, no one could tell us we are wrong, I tell this having in mind the UN. Now these are very clear and they are not things that cannot be realised. There is a security agreement and we are very much attached to it. This should continue. At present an idea came up, the UN should have a force here and this force should station permanently here, and if some incidents take place this force could interfere. We say no to this Turkey is saying no to this. I think this is what inspired esteemed Verheugen to talk this way. It is clear to us we do not make such a mistake. That is we do not take risks that in future will give headaches to Turkey and to the TRNC. That is I do not let this risk to be taken. Turkey cannot contribute for the creation of incidents even on human dimensions I am not looking into the issue from the point of view that the Greek Cypriot Administration had done something bad and an incident would be created; Turkey cannot contribute and approve of the incidents that might be of human dimension. While the negotiations are going on one should not interfere. We are extending every support to Denktas and we will continue to do so. We have to facilitate his work.''

Commenting on the criticism launched by the EU commissioner responsible for enlargement Gunter Verheugen against Turkey and Denktas, Cem said that he does not share Verheugen's views. Cem added that Turkey and the occupied area had submitted a model for the solution of the Cyprus problem and that this is very important. He claimed that this is a model on which the two ''peoples'' will agree to. He said that this model is open to discussion.' If the field of action of the Central Administration is limited too much, we can discuss it, we can make it more effective in that area, however, everybody knows that where there are limits that we cannot give up.'' Cem concluded.

[02] Denktas accuses EU's Verheugen of undermining direct talks

According to KIBRIS (20.06.02) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has said that Gunter Verheugen, the Commissioner of EU Enlargement is undermining the direct talks with his statements, adding that he is weakening the credibility of the EU.

Denktas met yesterday morning with the Norwegian ambassador in Cyprus and conferred with him for some time. Hakki Muftuzade, Denktas/ presidential secretary for political affairs, was also present at the meeting. In reply to a question by a correspondent prior to the meeting, Denktas assessed the views expressed by Verheugen in his report submitted to the EU's General Affairs Council to the effect that Denktas has not adopted a constructive stand at the talks.

Noting the Verheugen has not given a realistic and satisfactory reply to the question of what the Cyprus problem is and that he does not know what the Cyprus problem is about, Denktas said that Verheugen's eyes are tightly shut. Noting that Verheugen is reaching decisions on the Cyprus issue assuming that there is a legal Cyprus government and that this government represents the entire island, Denktas stressed that this stand adopted by Verheugen is undermining the direct talks. He is destroying his independence and credibility. Denktas said that this is the reason why he does not attach importance to Verheugen's statements and that neither should anyone else. He concluded by saying: "We will continue to safeguard our cause. "

[03] Yilmaz: Turkey should rid itself from the Sevres syndrome

Turkish Daily News (20.06.02) reports that Mesut Yilmaz, deputy Prime Minister and MP [Motherland Party] leader, expressed the opinion that Turkey suffers from Sevres syndrome and should rid itself from it. Addressing the MP Assembly group meeting Yilmaz said yesterday that people queued up in front of embassies in Turkey and many Turkish Cypriots were going to the free areas of Cyprus or the United Kingdom because of the unemployment problem in the occupied areas of the island.

Mr Yilmaz added the following: "We should definitely rid ourselves from Sevres syndrome. Europe is not the same old Europe, neither is Turkey".

Mr Yilmaz noted also that his hopes about fulfilling the EU criteria are gradually diminishing and added: "No one should doubt anyone's patriotism." Noting that no concessions are being made on the EU issue, Yilmaz said that the real concession was made when the Customs Union agreement was signed.

Mr Yilmaz further criticized TPP [True Path Party] leader Tansu Ciller without naming her. Noting that no concessions have so far been made to the EU, Yilmaz said: "The real concession was made on the Cyprus issue when the Customs Union agreement was signed." He continued: "Those who say that concessions are now being made on the Cyprus issue to the EU, made the concession on the commencement of the negotiations between south Cyprus and the EU because of the Customs Union agreement." He further noted that people are confusing concessions with criteria, adding that the criteria are being portrayed as though they are concessions.

[04] The pseudostate earns a lot of money form exporting milk products

According to information acquired by the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, during the period 1997 - 2001, Kuwait bought the largest quantity of halloumi by the pseudostate, which earned from this commercial relation the amount of 7.411.265 dollars.

AFRIKA (20.06.02) reports that the number of the people who have the right to "vote" in the 30 June so-called "municipal elections" is 134 thousand and 628.

[06] A fire started in the occupied area of Dikomo

KIBRIS reports that "a great fire" started last night at about 23:00 hours near the occupied village of Dikomo. As a result of strong winds, which were blowing in the area the fire spread rapidly and threatened some houses of the village.

The paper writes also that the fire reached the electric power station in Dikomo and the supply of electricity in the area was stopped. Firemen, soldiers of the occupation army and inhabitants of the area tried to get the fire under control, but they were not able to do it until the early morning hours.
