[01] Denktash denies discussion on maps in Geneva According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (16:30 hours, 2.11.00), Turkish Cypriot

The fifth round Cyprus proximity talks, which began in Geneva the day before yesterday, continued yesterday as well.

Denktash replied to reporters/ questions before his meeting with de Soto, a meeting that lasted approximately one and a half hours.

When a journalist reminded him that map experts were invited to the talks, Denktash said: ``I am not aware of such a thing. Maps will not be discussed''.

In turn, de Soto said that he cannot comment on the content of the talks at this stage, but the sides are very determined on certain issues.

In a statement after his meeting with de Soto, Denktash declared that no maps were raised or discussed during the talks. ``No idea that would turn the Turkish Cypriots into refugees once again can be accepted'', he said.

Denktash will continue his contacts with the representatives of the sides pertinent to the Cyprus problem. Denktash will meet with Alfred Moses, US President Bill Clinton/s special envoy for Cyprus, today. (3.11.00)

Recalling, inter alia, that Cyprus was the joint problem of Turkey and Britain and that proximity talks were still underway for the solution of this problem, Haktanir said they hoped the talks would succeed and the conflicts would end.

Haktanir said, ``however, it should be known that nothing but a realistic agreement considering the sovereignty and security of Turkish Cypriots and based on the principle of equality would solve the problem there''.

Haktanir stressed that Turkey considered confederation, which the two separate ``states'' on the island would form, as the most realistic solution on the island.

Haktanir pointed out that proximity talks resumed in Geneva, adding that everybody, especially the EU, should ask the question what would happen if the talks fail to yield in a result.

``Whether or not an agreement is provided on the island following the full membership talks, the EU which is getting ready to make the Greek Cypriot side as the member under the name of Cyprus, in fact prepared a basis for a nightmare,'' Haktanir claimed.

Stressing that this ``nightmare'' would be valid for the EU itself primarily, Haktanir said, ``because, thus, they would officially recognize the fact that the island would remain partitioned forever''.

Erdengiz reiterated that an essential issue like the territorial issue cannot be discussed before a common ground has been reached, adding: ``If the sovereignty of the TRNC is not recognized, it is impossible to engage in a give-and-take process''.

Referring to discussions on deploying a peace force in Cyprus, Erdengiz said that the ``TRNC'' is opposed to the dilution of the guarantees issue. He claimed that the guarantee of the future consists of Turkey and the Turkish army, adding: ``We cannot surrender our future to an international peace force such as the one in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Somalia. These forces failed to be effective when tens of thousands were massacred in the Balkans''.

Alleging that the option of federation is a very complex alternative that overlooks the 1974 events, Erdengiz said that the Greek Cypriot side declared that a possible agreement will be reached with the Turkish Cypriot side, which will unite with the Cyprus Republic. This is unacceptable, he stated.
