[01] Denktash claims Cyprus/ EU membership negative factor Anatolia Agency (19:37 hours, 1.11.00) reports that Alvaro De Soto, the

Special Representative of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Cyprus, met on Wednesday with Rauf Denktash within the framework of the fifth round of proximity talks on Cyprus in Geneva, Switzerland.

Addressing journalists prior to the meeting, Denktash said, ``the Greek Cypriot side/s membership to the European Union (EU) will be a negative factor which will disrupt balances. The EU membership will lift Turkey/s guarantorship. The Greek Cypriots who had migrated from Northern Cyprus within the framework of the exchange of property, will proceed to Northern Cyprus again. Such a development will disrupt balances''.

Denktash added, ``Glafcos Clerides, the leader of Greek Cypriot administration, has applied for EU membership by knowing that the Greek Cypriot refugees would migrate to the north, and the Hellenism would be founded on the island. Do Soto is aware that we were opposed to this. I will convey our opinions to him during the meeting''.

Alvaro De Soto, first came together with President Glafcos Clerides, within the framework of the talks.

Later he held a meeting with Rauf Denktash.

Noting that the European Union (EU) diplomats were helping them, De Soto said that the EU perspective would make a contribution to solution of the Cyprus question.

Addressing journalists prior to his meeting with De Soto, Denktash further said, ``I do not agree with De Soto/s opinion. The EU perspective is not a positive, but a negative factor to the Cyprus question''. Alleging that the Cyprus Government/s application for EU membership aimed at lifting Turkey/s guarantorship, Denktash told reporters, ``the Greek Cypriot side is trying to reach its target to settle Hellenism on the island by providing return of Greek Cypriot immigrants back to Northern Cyprus through EU membership. De Soto is aware that we are opposed to this.''

Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides interpreted EU/s statement differently. The statement which was issued on Tuesday said that the status quo on the island should be changed immediately.

The Greek Cypriot side interpreted the statement as ``withdrawal of Turkish soldiers'' while the Turkish Cypriot side interpreted it as ``the Greek Cypriot side is not the only government of the island.'' The fifth round of proximity talks are not expected to prepare an appropriate ground for face- to-face talks at the sixth round of proximity talks.

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan will go to Geneva next week to attend the fifth round of proximity talks on Cyprus.

Do Soto will come together with President Clerides and Rauf Denktash for the second time on Thursday.

[02] ``TRNC'' organizations free pigeons for peace to be ensured soon Anatolia Agency (10:49 hours, 1.11.00) reports that a total of 41

organizations in the occupied area flied on Wednesday pigeons for peace.

The organizations, including the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and the Patriotic Unity Movement (YBH), freed pigeons at the Ledra Palace check- point wishing peace to be ensured on Cyprus as soon as possible.

Ahmet Barcin, the Chairman of Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers Union, called on the leaders representing the two sides on Cyprus to behave in common sense during the fifth round of Cyprus proximity talks.

Barcin said that they want a lasting peace on Cyprus.

[03] Agreement with Turkey for economic and financial cooperation According to KIBRIS (2.11.00) the Turkish Council of Ministers convened

yesterday and approved the agreement signed between the Republic of Turkey and the occupied area on ``State Assistance in Investments''.

The said agreement has been published in Turkey/s official gazette and entered into force as of yesterday.

With this ``agreement'' the occupied area has been declared as ``Priority Region for Development''.

The five-point agreement envisage the deepening of the economic and financial cooperation between Turkey and the occupied area.

[04] Azerbaidjani party leader expresses support for pseudostate According to KIBRIS (2.11.00) the leader of the Azerbaidjani National

Independence Party (AMIP), Hibar Mehmedov, in a statement to Turkey/s Anatolia Agency, referred to the Cyprus problem and said:

``The North Cyprus Administration should feel Azerbaidjan/s support. It is necessary to develop cultural and economic ties with Cyprus''.

Mehmedov, referring to the letter written by Azeri leader Haydar Aliyev to President Clerides asking Cyprus/ support for Baku/s bid for Council of Europe membership, claimed that Aliyev/s sending this letter was a mistake.

[05] Dead fish and empty bottles of pesticide found on occupied shores According to KIBRIS (2.11.00) hundreds of empty PET bottles were washed out

on the shores of the occupied Davlos and Eptakomi villages .

The paper says that the bottles contain phosphate-base pesticides and insecticides used in agriculture.

Following analysis carried out at the so-called state lab, it was established that the chemicals contain the organic phosphate ``Methamidophos'' which is harmful to human health.

KIBRIS meanwhile reports that dead fish were found on the shores of occupied Trikomo and Boghaz in Famagusta and they have been sent to the ``state laboratory'' for analysis to find the cause of death.

According to KIBRIS, the so-called district officer of the occupied Trikomo, Mustafa Tamer, tried to cover up the issue. Tamer said: ``It is meaningless to cause unnecessary panic among the people. If this issue is reported in the press, the fishermen will face difficulty in earning their living''.
