[A] NEWS ITEMS[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash claims Cyprus/ EU membership negative factor Anatolia Agency (19:37 hours, 1.11.00) reports that Alvaro De Soto, theSpecial Representative of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to Cyprus, met on Wednesday with Rauf Denktash within the framework of the fifth round of proximity talks on Cyprus in Geneva, Switzerland.Addressing journalists prior to the meeting, Denktash said, ``the Greek Cypriot side/s membership to the European Union (EU) will be a negative factor which will disrupt balances. The EU membership will lift Turkey/s guarantorship. The Greek Cypriots who had migrated from Northern Cyprus within the framework of the exchange of property, will proceed to Northern Cyprus again. Such a development will disrupt balances''. Denktash added, ``Glafcos Clerides, the leader of Greek Cypriot administration, has applied for EU membership by knowing that the Greek Cypriot refugees would migrate to the north, and the Hellenism would be founded on the island. Do Soto is aware that we were opposed to this. I will convey our opinions to him during the meeting''. Alvaro De Soto, first came together with President Glafcos Clerides, within the framework of the talks. Later he held a meeting with Rauf Denktash. Noting that the European Union (EU) diplomats were helping them, De Soto said that the EU perspective would make a contribution to solution of the Cyprus question. Addressing journalists prior to his meeting with De Soto, Denktash further said, ``I do not agree with De Soto/s opinion. The EU perspective is not a positive, but a negative factor to the Cyprus question''. Alleging that the Cyprus Government/s application for EU membership aimed at lifting Turkey/s guarantorship, Denktash told reporters, ``the Greek Cypriot side is trying to reach its target to settle Hellenism on the island by providing return of Greek Cypriot immigrants back to Northern Cyprus through EU membership. De Soto is aware that we are opposed to this.'' Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides interpreted EU/s statement differently. The statement which was issued on Tuesday said that the status quo on the island should be changed immediately. The Greek Cypriot side interpreted the statement as ``withdrawal of Turkish soldiers'' while the Turkish Cypriot side interpreted it as ``the Greek Cypriot side is not the only government of the island.''
