[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash again speaks about ``provocateurs'' According to KIBRIS (Internet Version, 15.10.00), Turkish Cypriot leaderRauf Raif Denktash has argued that efforts are under way to turn into a ``demonstration against Turkey'' the strike that will be held Tuesday (17.10.00) against the ``government/s'' economic package. Denktash has said:``Beware of provocoateurs''. Denktash has touched on the general strike and demonstrations that will be held on Tuesday. Denktash has drawn attention to the existence of ``a group that seeks to turn the strike into a demonstration against Turkey.'' Calling on ``civil servants'', Denktash has said that the ``civil servants'' must comprehend the aim behind a strike, adding: ``Holding a strike means going to the workplace but refusing to work. Strikers need to be present at the work places and announce that they are on strike. You cannot leave your work place and join the demonstration. Otherwise, you would be committing an offense''. Warning that ``provocateurs'' who have dragged strikers and demonstrators up to the doors of the ``parliament'' building on previous occasions have now moved into action, Denktash has called on the people to be beware of these ``provocateurs''. He further alleged: ``The incidents that took place during the previous demonstrations aimed at separating us from Turkey and at seizing the case from the hands of Denktash, who has been defending you in the meetings (held with the Greek Cypriots). The demonstrations also aimed at telling the Greek Cypriots that there is no state in north Cyprus and at inviting the Greek Cypriots to come to north Cyprus in order to save the Turkish Cypriots''. Furthermore, according to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 16.10.00), in a statement during a meeting with a Pensioners Association delegation yesterday, Rauf Denktash recalled that he was criticized for saying that the economic package must be implemented without knowing the contents of the package. Denktash said that there are things that are being concealed from the people, the package must be signed before receiving money, and he asked that the package be signed in this context. Denktash also accused the ``coalition'' partners of wasting the people/s time by engaging in political horse trading. The ``government'' is responsible for the package and it is beginning to accept this in recent days, he said, asking people not to allocate this responsibility to himself or to Turkey. Stressing that a struggle is being waged to protect rights against the package, Denktash declared that certain ``provocateurs'' are trying tot urn these efforts against Turkey. Pointing out that in addition to those struggling for the protection of rights, stands will be adopted against himself and against Turkey during Tuesday/s general strike and rally, Denktash stated: ``The people can criticize me during such a protest action, but opposing Turkey would be tantamount to cutting the branch you are sitting on. We would all pay for a mistake to be committed against Turkey. The people are not against Turkey. A handful of people do not represent the Turkish Cypriots''. Asking people not to abide by provocation and to condemn those who speak against Turkey, Denktash remarked that an attitude against Turkey would inflict great damage on the island. Denktash said that the bank depositors/ action while he was in Geneva was reflected in the world press as the Turkish Cypriots/ opposition to Turkey and to the Denktash regime. Denktash declared that there is no motherland other than Turkey, and the people should not be incited against Turkey. [02] Turkish Cypriot Union leader criticizes Denktash According to YENIDUZEN (16.10.00), in a press announcement he has releasedon behalf of 41 organizations, KTOEOS (Union of Secondary School Teachers) chairman Ahmet Barcin has given a tough reply to Rauf Denktash/s remarks about the strike that will be held on Tuesday (16 October). Noting that Denktash/s statements have belittled the Turkish Cypriot community, Barcin has called on Denktash to refrain from sowing discord by accusing others of being provocateurs. Ahmet Barcin has said the following on behalf of the 41 organizations:``The picture that the government partners have drawn is a complete tragicomedy especially at a time when the annihilation of the Turkish Cypriot community has reached serious dimensions and while a coercive and destructive economic package has been announced. Let alone the incompetence of the UBP (National Unity party) - TKP (Communal Liberation Party) coalition government, President Rauf Denktash/s conduct is full of contradictions. President Denktash is poking fun at the Turkish Cypriot people. The remarks that President Denktash has made yesterday are once again aimed at belittling the Turkish Cypriot community. The endeavour of the individual at the highest post of the state to define the process of strike contrary to the existing laws as well as his endeavour to view himself above the law show that the President has made a mistake. If he reads the regulations on strikes and referendums, the President will find the genuine definitions of marches and strikes. There is no need to sow discord by accusing us of being provocateurs. In the same way that openly threatening citizens wishing to join the strikes and demonstrations does not befit the highest post in the country, this incident reveals the President/s understanding of democracy. Everyone should know that we are against anyone who has taken part in the preparation of the coercive economic package that has brought the Turkish Cypriot people, who are the owners of this country, on the verge of annihilation. Contrary to his wishes, the free will that we seek to generate will prevent the annihilation of our future generations. Moreover, these kinds of statements will not be able to prevent our people from joining the strikes and demonstrations that will be held on 17 October. The Turkish Cypriots are the owners of this country. We will continue to exist in this country even if certain people do not wish us to be here. Within this framework, we are calling on all our people to join the strike and demonstration against the real provocateurs who seek to destroy this country''. [03] Akinci meets FYROM Turkish Women Union ORTAM (17.10.00) reports that the so-called state minister and deputy primeminister of the pseudostate Mustafa Akinci met yesterday with a delegation of the Turkish Women Union of FYROM, headed by Suzan Musli. At the meeting, Akinci said that ``every passing day the relations between FYROM and TRNC are getting stronger''. [04] Bicommunal meeting According to YENIDUZEN (17.10.00) the occupation authorities once more putobstacles to the Turkish Cypriot press members who wanted to cover the bi- communal meeting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political party leaders that took place yesterday at the Ledra Palace Hotel. The newspaper accuses the occupation authorities of not showing any tolerance for the work of the press, stressing that the ``authorities'' have no idea about the international rules of journalism. The leader of the Democratic Party Serdar Denktash, the leader of the Republican Turkish Party Mehmet Ali Talat and Vasfi Candan from the same party, the responsible for foreign affairs of the Communal Liberation Party Gungor Gunkan, the general secretary of the Patriotic Unity Movement Izzet Izcan and Alpay Durduran from the same party, Panayiotis Demetriou and Kaiti Clerides from DESY party, Nicos Cleanthous from DEKO, Demetris Christofias and Eeleni Mavrou from AKEL, Vassos Lyssarides and Kyriakos Mavronicolas from KISOS and George Vassiliou and Andreas Ladas from the United Democrats Party, took part in the meeting. The meeting was organized by the Slovak Ambassador to Cyprus, Dusan Razbora. In a statement made after the meeting, Razbora said that the meeting was very positive. He also announced that they will repeat activities such as the ``Mutual Understanding Festival'', which according to his opinion was a success. Rozbora said that at the meeting they assessed the 4th round of proximity talks that was held in New York and made evaluations for the 5th round of indirect talks that will be held in Geneva. Finally, he said that the next bi-communal meeting between the political party leaders will be held on 20th of November at the Ledra Palace Hotel.
