In a statement before the meeting, Talat said that Britain is an important country for them, because she is one of the guarantor countries and is also member of the EU. Talat demanded from Britain to secure progress in the solution of the Cyprus problem and to contribute to Cypru/s accession efforts to the EU.Pointing out that there are some problems in the way to accession to the EU, Talat said that Greek Cypriot side by attending the accession negotiations representing the whole of Cyprus and in the absence of the Turkish Cypriot side, will cause some new and difficult problems in the coming years. Talat also said that those problems will start when Turkey and the EU open the accession negotiations. At that point he said, the position of the Turkish Cypriots vis a vis to the EU might face further difficulties. So, it is a must to have progress in the solution of the Cyprus problem, before handing progress in Turkey/s EU candidacy , and before completion of the Greek Cypriots/ accession negotiations. In a short statement before the meeting Philip Barton said that they will assess the latest developments on the Cyprus problem and he will be informed on Talat/s views regarding the 4th round of proximity talks that was held in New York From the Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office (PIO) Server at http://www.pio.gov.cy/Cyprus Press and Information Office: Turkish Cypriot Press Review Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
