[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash on Turkish soldiers in CyprusAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 31.8.00), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash paid separate courtesy calls on Brigadier General Galip Mendi, the new so-called Security Forces commander, and Major General Bahtiyar Turker, the new commander of the 28th Division. In a speech during his visit, Denktash said that "the Security Forces is the apple of our eye. Our people are happy and proud to see that their sons are being educated and trained in the best way" Denktash said that former so-called Security Forces Commander Ozeyranli - who has now been promoted to lieutenant general - rendered great services to raise the "security forces" standard of living. He said that Brigadier General Galip Mendi will make similar efforts and make more progress. Denktash pointed out that there are economic problems in the occupied area and that the people are in a crisis. He said: "What people in a crisis say and do must be received with understanding. If certain circles want to use what the people are saying to further their own interests, they should not be allowed to do that. Almost all our people consider the Security Forces Command as the holiest institution. While we, as the civilian force, try to protect these lands - which are part of the motherland - our freedom which we gained with blood and our democracy which we established with great difficulty, the only factors that allow us to live fearlessly is the Turkish army along the borders, the Turkish flag hoisted above our heads and the awareness that our mothrland will never give up its rights over Cyprus". Denktash said that the Greek Cypriots are saying that unless the military issue is resolved they will not participate in the negotiations. Denktash claimed that this shows that the Greek Cypriots do not want to negotiate with the Turkish Cypriots in order to solve the problems. Issuing another call to President Clerides, Denktash said the Greek Cypriots should change their policies. He said: "You have been trying these policies since 1955. A partnership republic was established based on the two peoples. You destroyed it in 1963 in the name of enosis. So now there are two states. Do not try to destroy it. Accept it. The best solution is to start from the current realities and build bridges. If we can build bridges of friendship that is good. If we cannot, then the two states will continue to exist. In no way can the Greek Cypriot rule, sovereignty, or authority infiltrate the TRNC. We will never allow that. We want equality". Furthermore, Anatolia Agency (12:17 hours, 31.8.00) reports that during his visit to the so-called Security Forces Command, Denktash criticized the Greek Cypriots for saying that the New York talks will be endangered unless the Strovilia problem is resolved. Denktash claimed: "This stand shows that the Greek Cypriots do not want to negotiate with us, because the more we speak at the table and the more we explain our cause to the world, the more the world understands that the Greek Cypriots are wrong". Denktash also pointed out that the Greek Cypriots are taking steps to join the EU/s military wing and thus eliminate Turkey/s rights. He said: "The Greek Cypriots cannot give military supremacy to Greece or the Europe despite Turkey. They do not have the legal right to do that. We told the UN: If the Greek Cypriots take such a step, they must stop saying that they are ready to negotiate the Cyprus problem, they cannot deceive anyone". [02] Greek Cypriot youths "remanded" for 3 daysIllegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 31.8.00) reports that the two Greek Cypriot youths who had mistakenly crossed into the occupied area with a car in the Famagusta region, have been illegally arrested for three days.[03] Eroglu announces bankers to stand "trial"Anatolia Agency (10:44) hours, 31.8.00) reports that so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu has announced that the owners and managers of the banks that were confiscated by the "state" following their financial crisis will stand "trial" next month.Eroglu said: "Even if the steps were taken slowly, finally September is here. From the viewpoint of the people/s psychology, things have moved slowly. However, the Office of the Chief Prosecutor and the police have their explanations. This is a crisis of unprecedented proportions in the TRNC. The fact that there is no financial policy and the fact that the Office of the Chief Prosecutor encountered such a case for the first time caused things to move slowly. Ultimately, however, nobody can escape justice. Whoever is guilty will be punished in proportion to his crime". [04] Albanian Parliamentary delegation visits pseudostateKIBRIS (1.9.00) reports that seven members of the Albanian Parliament had separate meetings with Rauf Denktash, "parliament speaker" Ertugrul Hasipoglu, "prime minister" Dervis Eroglu and "deputy prime minister" Mustafa Akinci on Thursday.Speaking at the meeting, Denktash expressed his pleasure with frequent visits of Albanian delegations to the "TRNC", and briefed the Albanian parliamentary delegation on the Cyprus issue. Denktash stressed, "the two sides can reach an agreement only on the basis of two states under a confederal umbrella". Ertugrul Hasipoglu said that the "TRNC" and Albania had very good relations, alleging that the "TRNC" existed as a "state" although it was not recognized by international community. Noting that the fourth round of proximity talks process which would start on September 12 was very important for the Cyprus issue, Hasipoglu called on the Greek Cypriot side to approach the proximity talks with good will and seriousness. Dervis Eroglu said that the relations between the "TRNC" and Albania were deeply rooted, adding, "our relations with Albania at parliamentary level continue. Besides, municipalities of our two countries have friendly and good relations. Thus the friendship between our two countries has been deeply rooted. The frequent visits from Albania to the TRNC reinforce this friendship and make us happy." Mustafa Akinci said that such visits were in favour of both the "TRNC" and Albania. He added that the only request of the Turkish Cypriots was the Greek Cypriots/ showing respect to their rights and recognizing their equality. Speaking on behalf of the Albanian parliamentarians, Leonard Demi said that they wished that the "TRNC" would be recognized as an independent state. The Albanian Parliamentary delegation is composed of Leonard Demi, Hamid Gjoni, Pal Dajgi, Fatbaradh Hushi, Mark Krogi, Xhevedet Mehmet and Nazif Bezhani. This is the second parliamentary delegation from Albania that visits the occupied area within the last ten days. [05] Turkey/s Akbulut addresses Parliamentary Speakers Summit in New York, refers to CyprusTRT 1 Television (7:00 hours, 1.9.00) carries a report saying that at the parliamentary speakers/ summit, being held in New York and organized by the United Nations and the Interparliamentary Union, Turkey is being represented by Yildirim Akbulut, speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM).On the second day of the summit, Akbulut delivered a speech saying that parliaments must assume more responsibility in international relations. He noted that international cooperation must be developed and that the TBMM is ready to do its share in this regard. Referring to the remarks on the Cyprus issue of the Greek parliament speaker who spoke before him, Akbulut claimed: "Cyprus is the land of two separate and equal peoples who have separate democratic institutions. I would like to remind my Greek colleague that the age of globalization has made it impossible for the realities to escape the eyes and memories of people. The solution of the Cyprus problem which has existed for the past 37 years can only be possible with the recognition of the equality of the two states on the island". The summit is being attended by the parliamentary speakers of 150 countries. In New York, Akbuklut met his Azerbaidjani counterpart, Murtuz Aleskerov. They discussed bilateral relations and cooperation in international organizations , including the United Nations. [06] Price of electricity very highThe front page article of KIBRIS (1.9.00) under the title "The worst problem for us is electricity" refers to the price of electricity in the occupied area which is the highest compared to those in the European countries. It is almost double the price of electricity in the free areas of the Republic.[07] Depositors on strikeAccording to KIBRIS (1.9.00), in a written statement, the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot depositors Metin Arhun said that a strike will be held on 7th September in the occupied part of Nicosia. Arhun said that their hopes that the so-called government can solve their problem soon have faded. He also pointed out that they are determined to use their legal rights in order to have their demands fulfilled by this "government" or any other. From the Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office (PIO) Server at http://www.pio.gov.cy/Cyprus Press and Information Office: Turkish Cypriot Press Review Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
