[01] Two Greek Cypriots illegally arrested
Anatolia Agency (2:18 hours, 30.8.00) reports that two 23-year old Greek
Cypriots, Stelios Papadopoulos and Nesimos Kadis were illegally caught by
the occupation regime after entering the occupied area by car on Tuesday
night in the Famagusta region.
Their car was illegally confiscated.
[02] HURRIYET KIBRIS closes down
HURRIYET KIBRIS (31.8.00) reports that today is the paper/s last publishing
day. HURRIYET KIBRIS, which is the supplement of the Turkish mainland
newspaper HURRIYET, started being published on 1st December 1998. The
reason of the closing down of the newspaper is the economic crisis in the
occupied area.
[03] "This is our country" rally
The front page article of AVRUPA (31.8.00) under the title "If you want to
find your rights, come along too!", refers to tomorrow/s "This is our
country" rally, which is organized by 45 non-governmental organizations in
the occupied area.
Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash is said to be really anxious over this
gathering and makes continuous calls to the supporters of the National
Unity Party (UBP) not to attend the rally, the paper says.
[04] Old Zefiros hotel reopened
According to BIRLIK (31.8.00) a reception was given at the five star Merit
Hotel, which is the old Zefiros hotel, in occupied Kyrenia. The reception
was attended by tourist agencies and the press.
BIRLIK says the investment money spent so that the old Zefiros hotel be
reopened under the name Merit hotel has reached the amount of 20 million
dollars. The hotel has a 460 room capacity and 192 personnel.
