[01] Turkish Cypriot NGO/s blame Turkey, Denktash, `government/ for economic situation

Illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (15:30 hours, 21.8.00) reports that forty-one non- governmental organizations (NGO/s) have called on the Turkish Cypriots to stage a united resistance against the latest price hikes. A statement issued by the Organization of Socialist Truth in Cyprus on behalf of the 41 NGO/s says that the economic steps have led the people to the brink of the precipice, and that Turkey, Denktash, past "governments", and the current "government" bear the responsibility for that.

In their statement, the 41 NGO/s charge that the price hikes on petrol and diesel oil caused a chain reaction and led to other price hikes. They claim that the idea behind these economic steps is to put an end to production and eliminate the Turkish Cypriots. We will not allow that, the NGO/s say.

[02] Denktash on population exchange, properties

The front page article of KIBRISLI (22.8.00) under the title "Eroglu is blackmailing" refers to Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash/s interview to Kibrisli/s journalist Sinasi Basaran.

Denktash stated that with Eroglu/s blackmailing policy the "national cause" is being damaged, as well as the relations with Turkey and the domestic front.

Denktash claimed that "the population exchange that occurred in 1975 was an exchange based on the acceptance that the two peoples cannot live together. The exchange took place in order to reduce frictions between the two peoples. It was a necessary exchange for security". He went on claiming:

"After the population exchange, 27 years after these people left their properties, it is sheer non-sense to say that they can go back".

He said: "We assess this demand in this way and we say that if they insist on that, it means that they do not want an agreement.".

    [03] Republican Turkish Party booklet

According to KIBRIS (22.8.00) the Republican Turkish Party has published a 16-page booklet titled "Why the chaos, what is the solution" in which the problems existing in the occupied area and their solutions are listed.

In the booklet it is said that a chaotic situation exists in the occupied area and that production should be increased. The booklet introduces the slogan "We will produce, we will govern".

It strongly criticizes Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and the so- called NUP-CLP coalition government for dragging the occupied area from crisis to crisis. It says: "For years the development and reform efforts of the Turkish Cypriot people as well as its moral, cultural and political knowledge has been oppressed and precluded".

The booklet speaks about local pressure, which is supported from outside, for maintaining the status quo in the occupied area.

The "Why the chaos, what is the solution" booklet criticizes the introduction of the economic policies of Turkey without examining whether they are suitable for the occupied area or not.

It also criticizes substituting the Cyprus pound with the Turkish lira as the legal tender in the occupied area.

The booklet says that the overwhelming majority of the Turkish Cypriots want to take part in the EU process. It accuses Eroglu and Denktash for misleading the people with their statements during their "election" campaigns regarding the EU course.

The booklet stresses that it is a reality that both Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots have interests in Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots/ interest lies in their awareness that Cyprus is their motherland and that they are a partner in Cyprus/ sovereignty, the booklet says.

The booklet concludes by saying that the solution of the problem lies in broadening the political spectrum, increasing participation, democratization and introducing all the elements that are needed for self- rule.

    [04] Pseudostate at Izmir fair

HURRIYET KIBRIS (22.8.00) reports that a delegation headed by the so-called economy and finance minister Mehmet Bayram will participate in the 69th Traditional Izmir Fair that will be held between 26 August and 10 September.

38 companies, 5 "universities" and two associations from the pseudostate will take part in the fair.

[05] Morphou "mayor" to visit FYROM

According to ORTAM (22.8.00) the so-called Moprhou mayor Mahmut Ozcinar will fly to FYROM between 22-27 of August, as the guest of the mayor of the town of Kalkandelen.

The visit is within the framework of a "friendship protocol" that was signed in 18th of July.
