[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] DENKTASH : MOSES SAYS CYPRUS TALKS TO TAKE PLACE END OF JUNEAnatolia Agency (1247 hours, 11/5/2000) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Thursday that Alfred Moses, the U.S. President Bill Clinton/s Special Envoy to Cyprus, told him that the third round of proximity talks, planned to take place in New York on May 23, was postponed.Responding to the questions of reporters, Denktash said Moses called him on the phone on Wednesday evening, and told him that the May 23 proximity talks were postponed, and that would take place at the end of June. Denktash said Moses will hold contacts regarding the date of the talks, and added that he will visit Cyprus before the talks and give them information. Denktash noted that there were rumors saying third round of talks would take place in Geneva instead of New York. [02] DENKTASH ASKS FOR /EXTREME MEASURES/ IN ECONOMYAnatolia Agency (1415 hours, 11/5/2000) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, said on Thursday that economic problems piled up and lack of confidence to banks continued in "TRNC", and asked "extreme measures" to be taken in economy."The fire should be extinguished before it spreads, "Denktash said and added that he briefed President Suleyman Demirel about the "TRNC/s" economic problems. Denktash met with the Cyprus Turkish Farmers Association on Thursday. During the visit, Denktash said that "TRNC" is facing serious economic problems and accused the "government" for not taking the necessary measures on time. Denktash said he will ask the Turkish economic delegation to visit the "TRNC" at an earlier date than scheduled. When asked if the pseudo-government asked for money from Turkey, Denktash said "I don/t know if the government had such a request from Turkey or not. I told Demirel how serious the situation is. It is difficult to find a solution without new money under these conditions. But if the same system will continue, the money will be wasted. Everybody is expecting scientific reports. Unfortunately, there is a lack of trust everywhere," Denktash commented. [03] PLANS TO BUILD HOTEL IN OCCUPIED KARPASIA SAID TO BE "ILLEGAL"The front page article of Hurriyet KIBRIS (11.5.00) under the title "Do not Sacrifice Karpasia" refers to the plans for the construction of a hotel in the occupied area of Karpasia near Rizokarpaso.According to the newspaper, there is no "legal permission" for constructing tourist complexes in that area and in addition the "experts" did not give their permission. It also says that according to confidencial sources, the so-called Tourism Planning Bureau has given Turkish Cypriot businessmen Asil Nadir, whose bank is now under the control of the pseudogovernment, a coastal area 2,5 km long in the occupied village of Yialousa, for tourism investments. [04] DENKTASH MEETS HOLGER, FOREIGN DIPLOMATSYeni Demokrat (12.5.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had a meeting yesterday with UN/s James Holger. The meeting lasted half an hour. Denktash/s advisor Mustafa Evran was present at the meeting.In a statement after the meeting, Denktash said that they discussed the 3rd round of indirect talks to be held at the end of June, but they did not talk about the venue of the talks. Rauf Denktash also had a meeting yesterday with the Australian High Commissioner to Cyprus, Frank Ingruber. Denktash said that the meeting was within the framework of courtesy visits of the newly-appointed Australian High Commissioner. Denktash/s advisors Ergun Olgun, Necati Munir Ertekun and Mustafa Evran were also present at the meeting. [05] TURKISH FOREIGN MINISTRY DELEGATION TO VISIT PSEUDOSTATEAccording to KIBRIS (12.05.00) a twenty three-member delegation from the Turkish Foreign Ministry is to arrive in the occupied area for a familiarization visit. The delegation is headed by Ambassador Ahmet Ogur Celikkol. The delegation will leave the occupied area on Sunday, 14 May.[06] TOURIST SHIP TO MAKE MERSIN - FAMAGUSTA ROUTEAccording to KIBRIS (12.05.2000) Zafer Maritime Company in Izmir, Turkey, has bought a Ro-Ro ship which will ply between the Mersin port (South Turkey) and the occupied Famagusta port.With this ship, named "Magusa", the number of ships registered in the occupied area has reached 29. Zafer Maritime Company is owned by the Pirlant family from Izmir. The company has two more ships, "Victor" and "Hasan Pirlant". These two ships ply between the Izmir port (Western Turkey) and the occupied Famagusta port. [07] STRIKE AT OCCUPIED SALAMIS HOTELAccording to KIBRIS (12.05.00) workers at the occupied Salamis Bay Conti Hotel held a 24 hour warning strike.The trade union TES (Tourism Toilers Trade Union) which started the strike warned the employer that unless a collective agreement is signed the warning strike will turn into an indefinite strike. KIBRIS reports that 700 tourists are currently staying at the 1200 bed capacity hotel, 500 of them Belgian tourists. The Istanbul Airlines (IHY) General Coordinator in the occupied area Mehmet Kral has declared that they will not sign a collective agreement with TES. The IHY has made huge investments in the occupied Salamis Bay Hotel. Kral told KIBRIS that they cannot hand over the "fate of a such hotel to a trade union". Kral warned that if the strike continues they will "do whatever is necessary". [08] FOREIGN OFFICE OFFICIAL MEETS TURKISH CYPRIOT LEADERSOrtam (12.5.00) reports that the so-called State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Akinci met yesterday with the head of the South Europe and Cyprus Desk at the British Foreign Office, Mrs. Dawn McKen. During the visit McKen was accompanied by the Second Secretary responsible for Turkish Affairs at the British High Commission in Cyprus, Peter Boxes.In a statement after the meeting, Akinci claimed that in order to achieve progress in the Cyprus problem "the two separate existences on the island must be accepted. A formula must be adopted for two existences in the domestic. issues and one for abroad. It is the only way." Akinci explained his known views about "one representation of Cyprus abroad and two sovereignties in Cyprus." In a short statement Dawn McKen said that the meeting was really interesting and she was well-informed, adding that the purpose of her visit to Cyprus is to hear and ask some questions. McKen also had a meeting yesterday with the leader of the Republican Turkish Party, Mehmet Ali Talat. In a statement, McKen repeated that the purpose of her visit was to know Cyprus and the Cyprus problem. Talat explained to her the views of his party on Cyprus-EU relations. According to Birlik (12.5.00) McKen met yesterday with the General Secretary of the National Unity Party Dr. Vehbi Zeki Serter and NUP member Tuncer Arifoglu, and exchanged views on the Cyprus issue.
