[01] Denktash on translation of acquis communautaire

Anatolia Agency (9:03 hours, 17.3.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash reacted sharply against the 3 million Euro subsidy allocated by the EU Commission ``to translate the EU regulations into Turkish'', saying:

``The translation of legal procedures is the work of experts. There are such experts in Turkey''.

Denktash said that the pseudostate undertook initiatives with the EU regarding this matter and conveyed its objections. He claimed: ``The regulations will be translated into Turkish, therefore this should be done either in the TRNC or in Turkey''.

Denktash remarked that it is impossible for the Turkish Cypriots to accept a translation to be done by the Greek Cypriot side, and claimed that this means that they would have to review every single sentence.

Pointing out that it has been understood that this decision was made within the framework of the EU resolution ``to inform the Turkish Cypriots'', Denktash noted: ``This is still a move envisaging our support for the Greek Cypriot application for EU membership. However, we are undertaking moves to establish direct contact with the EU''.

Stressing that the Turkish Cypriots do not need such information, Denktash said that they conveyed their objection to the EU headquarters.

Denktash recounted that following Turkey/s EU candidacy, the Turkish Cypriots also established contact with EU officials, adding:

``We insisted that the EU establish direct contact with the TRNC authorities to ensure political and economic equality in Cyprus. We explained and we are still explaining that the Greek Cypriot application does not include us, that it does not concern us, and that it is being used as a vehicle to usurp our rights through illegal and political means''.

Denktash remarked that the Turkish Cypriots/ contacts in this regard are continuing.

    [02] Denktash in Ankara
