He also wished that Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots return to their homes. To a question if he will accept Denktash, the Archbishop said that he welcomes all Turkish Cypriots. (DP) [05] DENKTASH'S ADVISOR ON CYPRUS SETTLEMENTKIBRIS (16.03.00) publishes an interview with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's legal advisor on the Cyprus problem, Necati Munir Ertekun.Answering a question about his long cooperation with Denktash, Ertekun said that this cooperation started 47 years ago. KIBRIS further says that as legal advisor to Denktash, Ertekun took part in all negotiation processes regarding the settlement of the Cyprus problem. When asked what was the most frequent question asked abroad regarding the pseudostate, Ertekun said: "What they want to know most is whether the two communities, Greek and Turkish Cypriots, will be gradually living together harmoniously. That is, they do not enter into details, such as federation or confederation. What foreigners want to know is whether the Greeks and Turks will be able to live nicely whatever the settlement might be. That is, will it work? My view - may be it is wrong - my sincere belief, my realistic approach is that after so many years, after so much animosity it is very difficult for us to be together. There is not a single Turk who in this way or that has not been affected negatively from the Greek Cypriots' behaviour. Human beings' brain is not a computer that if you click it will eraise everything. Let Denktash, or Clerides or whoever, be it the prime minister, be it Ecevit, sign the agreement. This will not erase what has been experienced. On this issue I always give the example of Britain and Germany. Although they signed a peace agreement and became friends, from time to time the old animosity surfaces between them. My answer to the foreigners is: 'Yes, we have lived together on this island, we had a lot of mixed villages such as Peristerona. However, even though we have lived together for so many years and centuries, at no time were the Greek Cypriots sovereign. Every normal person wants and loves peace. We have to be fools to refuse peace. However, in order to conclude peace one has to be realistic. May be there will be a miracle. We want peace but our past deep in our minds is precluding this. It will be difficult, it will be very difficult'." When asked whether the new negotiation process regarding the Cyprus problem has moved towards a settlement, Ertekun said: "As I said earlier, one has to be optimistic. Looking at it this way and in view of the fact that we will attend the third round of talks in New York, we have to be a little bit hopeful. If you loose your hope in life, then everything ends. So we have to take part in the negotiations with the belief and wish that something will happen. If we do not believe, then we should not take part. However, if we will take part in the negotiations then we have to be optimistic. My personal view is that we will take part. However, our approach and Clerides' approach are diametrically opposite. They are different".
