[01] Turkey calls for recognition of Turkish Cypriots rights

Anatolia Agency (13:28 hours, 23.2.00) reports that the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that "the deprivation of the right of people living in the TRNC to travelling and correspondence is a shame of the international society".

Sermet Atacanli, the Turkish Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesman, told a weekly press briefing that the recognition of the Greek Cypriot side as the only legitimate administration on the island causes treatment of ten thousands of people living in the north of the island as second-class people.

[02] Cem to illegally visit pseudostate

KIBRIS (24.2.00) reports that Turkish Foreign Affairs Minister, Ismail Cem, will illegally visit the occupied area on the 26th of February in order to have official contacts.

According to an announcement of Turkey/s Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesman, Sermet Atacanli, "Cem will arrive Saturday morning and will have meetings with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and other government officials. The details of the visit will be announced this afternoon."

    [03] Antalya-Kyrenia ferry lines

According to KIBRIS (24.2.00) the ferry boats which have been rented from Norway will start the sea-line trips between Antalya and occupied Kyrenia on Kurban Bayram day (around 16 March).

The two ferry boats were rented for 60,000 dollars per month from Norway and they will carry 250 passengers each.

A round trip ticket will cost 60 dollars.

[04] "East Mediterranean University" signs "protocol" with Anatolia Agency

According to KIBRIS (24.2.00) the "East Mediterranean University/s" Journalism and Communication Faculty has signed a "cooperation protocol" with Anatolia News Agency (AA).

According to the "protocol", the two sides have agreed to do joint projects and exchange information on the technology and academic fields. The Journalism Faculty has already signed "protocols" with illegal TAK and BRT and with TRT.

[05] Turkish Cypriot caught at Austrian border

HURRIYET (24.2.2000) reports that Turkish Cypriot Hasan Rifat (69), who was carrying olive oil and halloumi cheese from the occupied area to London with his van, was stopped at the Austrian border and was fined by the border police. The foodstuff he was carrying was confiscated.

Rifat has claimed that he never had problems before at the border crossing while travelling the same route, but this time when Austrian border police asked Rifat whether he was Greek or Turkish Cypriot, he answered: "Does it make any difference? I am Turkish Cypriot". The police told him, "It makes a great difference" and confiscated his goods and asked him to pay a fine because he was carrying goods from an unrecognized country. He was asked to pay a 4.5 billion TL fine and the cheese was to be confiscated . Following this development, Rifat jumped out of the van window and started running on the highway. He was persuaded to go back to the border post, handcuffed, and was forced to pay a 700 million TL fine. He was then set free. HURRIYET brands this incident as Austria/s first racist action. (MY)
