[01] Denktash: Cyprus confederation should have one flag

Anatolia Agency (12:28 hours, 22.2.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Tuesday that if "Turkey and Greece reach an agreement about formation of a confederation in Cyprus, this state should have a common flag".

"But this flag should neither mean withdrawing the Turkish nor Greek flag, nor ending the rights of Turkey and Greece on the island", said Rauf Denktash.

Speaking in his meeting with administrators of the "Turkish Cypriot Fighters Association", Denktash said that this is necessary to be considered as one state by the UN. "The two sides will have separate laws and these laws will be valid in entries, exists, and regarding property rights", said Denktash. Denktash claimed that a partnership based on the existence of "states" is in question and this will lead to recognition of the "TRNC".

Denktash alleged that the Greek Cypriots have to move, but the world has to move first and show the "realities" to the Greek Cypriot side for a solution on the island. "Behind the closed doors, people tell TRNC officials that `an agreement will be made on the principle of two states. But you shouldnīt ask for the things you want in the beginning, want them later,ī" Denktash added.

[02] Akinci: Single flag representation impossible

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (16:30 hours, 21.2.00) Mustafa Akinci, "state minister and deputy prime minister", has stressed that by confederation Rauf Denktash means two representations on the island and one abroad, adding that such a formation requires the two sides to have their own flags. Noting that representation with a single flag in the full sense is impossible, Akinci added that Denktash is not in favour of such a development.

    [03] Norwegian MP continues contacts

According to BIRLIK (23.2.00) Haakon Blankenborg, the Norwegian Parliamentīs Foreign Affairs Commission Chairman, continued his contacts in the occupied area. Yesterday, Blankenborg met with the so-called assembly speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu, "prime minister" Dervis Eroglu and the leaders of DP and RTP, Serdar Denktash and Mehmet Ali Talat, respectively.

The Norwegian MP also visited the "East Mediterranean University" (EMU) where he met the Dean, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Oztoprak, with whom they discussed the issue of cooperation between "EMU" and Norwegian Universities. (DP)

[04] Lack of paper in the occupied area

The front page article of YENIDUZEN (23.2.00) under the title "Look at the government" refers to the lack of paper in the occupied area.

The article says that although the political authority had decided to "import" paper from the free areas, the military authority rejected the demand.

And consequently the so-called coalition government of the NUP and CRP, who had decided to "import" paper for newspapers from the free areas yesterday morning, drew back in the afternoon.

By the end of the week, there will be no paper to publish the newspapers, the article says.

Furthermore, AVRUPA (23.2.00) reports that the Patriotic Union Movementīs (PUM) "presidential candidate", Arif. H. Tahsin, has sent an open telegram to Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit for the scandal involving the lack of paper in the occupied area.

He says in the telegram that the civil military officials from Turkey do not recognize the right of Turkish Cypriots to manage themselves and they interfere with the political decisions, as was the case yesterday with the decision to "import" paper from the free areas.

    [05] "United States of Cyprus"

KIBRISLI (23.2.00) reports that according to confidential sources a new state will be established in Cyprus, called United States of Cyprus. This "state" will consist of two sovereign states. Also, the sides will reduce their armies by each withdrawing 10,000 soldiers every six months.

The UN will be the military guarantee for Cyprus.
