    [01] DENKTASH REPEATS "TWO-STATES" SCENARIO`

    According to illegal Bayrak Radio (11.30 hours 16.2.2000), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in a statement upon his return to Cyprus, said inter alia that Greek Foreign Minister Papandreou's suggestion that the Turkish Cypriots be given a regional autonomy is far from the realities. He added:

    "Our proposal is to establish harmony and unity between the two states. Such a unity must be established first so that we can advance and think of better things".

    Moreover, KIBRIS (17.2.2000) reports that Denktash in his statement referred to the face-to-face direct talks and said: "For a face to face meeting the ground should be prepared. To prepare ground means to accept equality, it means establishing the balance between the two sides". (MY)

    [02] HASIPOGLU: EU MEMBERSHIP IS THE APPLE OF ONE'S EYE

    According to KIBRIS (16.2.2000) the so-called speaker of the pseudo- assembly, Ertugrul Hasipoglu, has said that EU membership is the apple of one's eye for which one can sacrifice their life.

    Speaking during a panel discussion on "EU membership" in relation with Cyprus, Greece and Turkey, Hasipoglu declared that EU membership process has been delayed because of the lack of clear of policies to this end. "If Turkey does not turn her face towards the West, the internal conflicts will never end. For this reason one has to evaluate history properly", Hasipoglu noted. He said what had happened in the last 20 years in Turkey is the result of a planned scenario.

    Hasipoglu said that the Helsinki decision regarding Turkey was the result of international interests. He pointed out that during a possible conflict that would be caused by Russia, especially in the Caucasus, Europe would try to use Turkey as a shield.

    "Because of military, political and economic reasons, EU cannot turn a blind eye on Turkey", Hasipoglu said and added that from Turkey's point of view entry into the EU is a must.

    [03] "SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL COOPERATION PROTOCOL"

    According to VATAN (16.2.2000) a scientific and cultural cooperation protocol has been signed between Balikesir University of Turkey and the so- called "East Mediterranean University" in the occupied area.

    [04] "PARACHUTE TOURISM"

    According to KIBRIS (17.2.2000) representatives from German tourist agencies are in the occupied area.

    The article does not give details. It just writes that one of then, the director of the German I.D. Team company, Stefan Kindler, and the owner of the Atlantis Reisen tour operator company, Ozcan Ozdemir, briefed yesterday the so-called state minister and deputy prime minister Mustafa Akinci about the initiatives for the beginning of "parachute tourism".

    Akinci stated: "If our guests, who will come in April for parachute tourism, leave satisfied, then they will encourage more people to visit us. For the first time this year, we will attend a special interest tourism fair. Our aim is to increase our variety and develop the tourism field. In this respect, Germany is a very important country for us. We have new opened a tourist office in Germany. We already have offices in London and Antalya. In the future we will increase them".

    [05] BANKING CRISIS

    According to YENIDUZEN (17.2.2000) depositors who are affected from the banking crisis, have rejected the time-table proposed by the occupation regime to compensate depositors.

    The coordination committee members of the depositors from Everest bank, Yurt bank, Finansbank and Hurbank met the other day and made a counter proposal.

    The affected depositors want a clear pledge from the occupation regime regarding a payment timetable.

    [06] PRICE INDEX

    According to KIBRIS (17.2.2000) the so-called State Planning Organization (SPO) of the pseudo state has released the consumer price index regarding the period covering 13 December 1999-12 February 2000.

    According to the data provided by the so-called SPO, the index during this period increased by 10.65%.

    [07] PSEUDOSTATE AT TOURISM FAIR IN GLASGOW

    KIBRIS (17.2.2000) reports that the pseudostate's tourism was promoted at a tourism fair, which was organized in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the first time that the pseudostate attended this tourism fair at the Scottish Exhibition Centre.

    2000 persons visited the "TRNC" stand. Everyone was given an information package, which included details related to the natural beauty, historical and cultural heritage of the occupied area.

    [08] DETAILED MAPPING OF OCCUPIED AREA

    According to KIBRIS (17.2.2000) the agricultural projects jointly prepared and carried out by the Agricultural Faculty of the Cukurova University, South Turkey, and the so-called ministry of agriculture and forestry have been presented to the so-called ministry's personnel.

    Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Dr Nedim Uygun, briefed the personnel on the mapping project, which involves the detailed mapping of the agricultural land in the occupied area.

    Prof. Uygun said that detailed maps of the 329890 hectars of land will be prepared on a 1:25000 scale and maps on land use, arable land and land for potential use will be published.

    Prof. Uygun then briefed the personnel on the agricultural research and development projects.

    The projects which started in July 1999 will be completed in 2003. (MY)
