[01] EU-Turkey relations and Cyprus debated at UK

A spokesperson from the Foreign Office said the meeting had been projected some time ago but was not achieved due to the officials´ busy schedules. Among the topics covered were the latest EU declaration in Cologne and a new initiative on Cyprus. Logoglu was said to have expressed Turkey´s disappointment with the continuing EU approach to Turkey´s candidate status and asked for UK support at the upcoming Helsinki summit where the membership debate will take place.

A Foreign Office official said they were expecting a push for a solution on Cyprus this coming autumn and added that the Cyprus issue was one of the top issues debated during Logoglu´s visit. ``Officials exchanged views about the need for a new initiative and we believe there will be a big step taken this autumn,'' the official expressed, refraining from providing details of the new initiative.

The same official added that the Foreign Office minister responsible for Europe was expected to visit Turkey mid-July.

The UK Labour government has been very supportive of Turkeys EU bid, despite its advocating of Cyprus membership even before a solution is reached on the island. However, the United Kingdom has failed to achieve much in solving the deadlock between Turkey and the EU since the Luxembourg summit.

[02] Lefka water reservoir said contaminated by CMC waste

A delegation from the Lefka Environment and Promotion Association headed by its chairman Teoman Oktay had a meeting yesterday with so-called deputy prime minister Mustafa Akinci during which they discussed the region`s pollution problems.

Oktay said that the water reservoir in Lefka contains heavy metal ions. He said that the heavy metal concentration in the reservoir is higher than world standards for water to be used for irrigation purposes. He said that the waste left by the CMC is the main cause of pollution.

[03] The Sourp Magar Monastery

The Monastery was under Armenian administration since 1925. Between 1895- 1897 it was used as a guest house by the Turks and then it was left unattended. The major part of the Monastery has collapsed due to earthquakes. The eastern wall outside the monastery reflects Middle Age architecture. The room at the northeast corner was used for guests and was built in the XV century. The present church was built between 1811-1814 and has no historic value.

[04] Contaminated water

AVRUPA reports that Akin Aktunc, a responsible at the so-called Nicosia municipality, confirmed the reports about contamination and said that they will cut water supply coming to Nicosia from occupied Dikomo.

[05] Chickens destroyed because of salmonella

The paper says that the chickens are for producing eggs.

The cost of destroying the chickens is around 75 billion TL. The so-called minister of agriculture Irsen Kuchuk confirmed press reports that chickens carry salmonella.

[06] Ship traffic in the occupied area

During this period 209 ships called at the occupied Kyrenia part and 106 ships at the occupied Famagusta port. A total of 366 ships called at the occupied area and 369 ships left the occupied ports.

[07] Echinococcus in the occupied area

According to information reaching the paper, because of the epidemic a lot of people refuse to eat chicken, beef and sheep meat. AVRUPA adds that liver is not consumed at all.

The paper reports that echinococcus screening started in recent months at the occupied village of Vouno but did not spread to other villages or areas.

AVRUPA says that people are expecting to be briefed on the issue. (MY)
