[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] British envoy: Turkey´s refusal of dialogue on Cyprus issue can prevent her EU membershipAccording to Anatolia Agency (14:22 hours, 15.4 99), David Logan, the British Ambassador to Ankara, said on Thursday that Turkey and Greece should not cut dialogue even in the worsening situations, stressing, ``Turkey´s cooperation with Greece in the Kosovo crisis is pleasing''.Staging a conference on ``Turkish-European Union (EU) Relations'' at the Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Logan said that Turkey´s refusal of the EU conditions for the full-membership didn`t suit with candidacy. Pointing out that Turkey`s status of EU candidacy still continues despite everything, Logan said, ``no other country can wish the EU membership of a prosperous Turkey, which concluded her economic development, as much as Britain''. Recalling that Turkey refused the dialogue with the EU on the Aegean problems, Cyprus and human rights issues, Logan said, ``Turkey`s refusal of dialogue with the EU on the Cyprus issue is a matter which can prevent her EU membership. The EU structure may be advantageous for both Turkey and Greece. Such a federal state can be put into effect without giving harm to the Turkish Cypriots.'' Stating that the human rights field is another issue that Turkey doesn`t accede to a dialogue, Ambassador Logan said, ``the EU doesn`t interfere in Turkey`s internal affairs concerning this issue, it requests Turkey to abide by international norms''. [02] Hasipoglu on IPU meetings in BrusselsAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 14.4.99), the so-called assembly delegation which attended the Interparliamentary Union (IPU) meetings in Brussels is continuing to hold contacts. Ertugrul Hasipoglu, ``assembly speaker'' who headed the delegation, speaking to illegal Bayrak on the developments at the meetings, claimed:``As you know, the meetings started on 11 April. We met with the IPU General Secretariat on Sunday evening. We expressed our views during a meeting with party representatives at 11:00 on Monday. It was a good meeting because those who have assumed the rule of intermediaries were briefed on the Cyprus issue. They had a chance to learn about our views. It was decided to hold another meeting today, Wednesday, at 1000. The guarantor states were also expected to be present at this meeting. Later, the same team was going to go out for a luncheon. The Egyptian representative was going to host this luncheon. When we arrived at 1000 yesterday, we and the Turkish representative had to wait at the door. We waited until 10:30. The representatives from Greek Cyprus, Greece, and Britain did not arrive – that is, the meeting was not held. We were only communicated the [word indistinct]. We were told that the meeting had been postponed but that they had not had a chance to inform us. This is not true. The truth is that the Greek Cypriots did not want to attend a meeting in which we were going to be represented equally. We, in turn, protested and are not going to be present at the luncheon. Most probably, a report will be issued today at 1500. We requested a meeting with the SWEU (Western European Union] chairman. Most probably, we will get a chance to meet with him after 1500 today. We will openly express our views at this meeting''. [03] Turks reject Greek Cypriot report of green line shooting incidentAccording to Anatolia Agency (00:48 hours, 16.4.99), the so-called Security Frees Press Bureau has issued a statement claiming that the Greek Cypriot report according to which last night an armed Turkish soldier, violated the buffer zone in the Kaymakli area and that Greek Cypriot soldiers opened warning fire at the Turkish soldier in question, is aimed at creating artificial tension and deceiving world public opinion. The statement noted that UNFICYP officials are investigating the incident, and further claimed: ``UNFICYP officials have inspected the said region and have stated that have not observed any signs indicating that the buffer zone and the Greek Cypriot territory have been violated and that in the wake of this observation, the Greek Cypriot soldiers who opened fire made statements differing from the statements they had made previously. In conclusion, UNFICYP officials have orally informed us that there has been no violation from the Turkish Cypriots sector as claimed by the Greek Cypriot administration, that it has been assessed that there are attempts to fabricate a scenario in connection with the incident in which Greek Cypriot soldiers opened fire, and that all these points will appear in the report to be prepared''.
