[01] Denktash explains reasons for announcing candidacy

According to illegal Bayrak radio (15:30 hours, 13.4.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that he felt the need to announce his candidacy for the ``presidency'' in order to shed light on the rumours along these lines.

In reply to a reporterīs question on the reasons for his announcing his candidacy for the ``presidency'' even though the ``presidential elections'' is more than a year away, Denktash said: ``I had to announce my candidacy in view of the rumours to the effect that I was not going to run in the next presidential elections because Turkey does not want me any more. I had to announce my candidacy because my closest friends and those organizations interested in my continuing in the office started to question whether these rumours were true. They voiced concern along these lines. This is the reason why I had to make this announcement. In this way, everybody knows now that I am going to run in the elections and either rest assured or start worrying.''
