[01] Eroglu: ``TAF should remain even in case of agreement''
According to illegal Bayrak Radio (11:30 hours, 18/1/99), so called prime
minister Dervis Eroglu and Mustafa Akinci, so-called state minister and
deputy prime minister, as well as certain ``ministers'' visited Lieutenant
General Aydin Sen, commander of the so-called Turkish peace force in
Cyprus; and Brigadier General Ali Nihat Ozeyranli, Turkish Cypriot so-
called security forces commander.
Eroglu met with Sen with a military ceremony. Afterwards he made a
statement to the press. He said that this was a courtesy call by the
``Council of Ministers''. Eroglu expressed his pleasure that Lt. Gen. Sen
was given the current post.
Eroglu stressed that his ``government'' is always ready to have
consultations with the army corps, adding: ``My government is in favor of
having the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) remain on the island for the sake of
the security of the TRNC. Even if an agreement is reached - which does not
seem likely at the moment - we believe that the TAF should remain in the
TRNC for the safety of the Turkish Cypriot people.''
[02] Turkish Cypriots visited Tekke
According to KIBRIS, AVRUPA, and HURRIYET KIBRIS (21.1.99), on the occasion
of the Muslims Eidel-Fitr (Ramadan Bayram) 1357 Turkish Cypriots yesterday
visited Hala Sultan Tekke, a Muslim holy shrine in Larnaca.
KIBRIS says that on the second day of the Bayram 1357 Turkish Cypriots
aboard 25 buses left the occupied area in the morning and through a
comfortable journey they first passed though the old quarter of Larnaca
where the Turkish quarter is situated and then headed for Tekke.
Stating that the holy shrine, the mosque and the surrounding area were well
preserved and cleaned, KIBRIS says that visitors first prayed and then sat
in the nearby restaurant or in the picnic area and enjoyed the day. KIBRIS
publishes various relevant photographs.
All the papers report that the UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus and the
Cyprus police escorted the buses and maintained security at the shrine.
Visitors returned to the occupied area around four o’clock in the
afternoon.
