    [01] TROOP REDUCTION 'ILLOGICAL'

"It is illogical for Clerides, who has renounced the idea of the S-300 missiles, to ask the Turkish side to reduce its troops. It is a crime to deploy the missiles, and the criminal cannot be rewarded for deciding not to commit the crime. The Turkish troops are on the island because of the occupationist government in the south, which claims to be the government of the whole of Cyprus; because of the Greek Government which supports it; and because of the continuing threat".

According to illegal Bayrak radio (17.1.99) the above statement was made by Denktash addressing "new recruits of the Security Forces".

He said that the two states can reach an agreement if the opposite side recognizes the existence of a Turkish Cypriot people in Cyprus, their own efforts to annihilate this people, their miscalculations, and the realities. In this way, Denktash added, the problem can be solved.
