[01] Pilot who helped Nadir escape, freed

Citing the Associated Press, the Turkish Daily News reports that the British Court of Appeal freed pilot Peter Dimon who had been jailed for two years for helping indicted Asil Nadir escape Britain in 1993, four months before he was scheduled to face trial on charges of theft. The paper adds that Nadir chaired Polly Peck which grew dramatically in the early 1980s, but eventually collapsed in 1991 with debts of $2.1 billion after investigators began probing irregularities in Nadir´s finances.

Nadir still faces 13 charges of theft in Britain involving 30 million pounds ($48 million) from his companies.

[02] Ecevit Government Wins Vote of Confidence

According to TRT (15.1.99) Bulent Ecevit received a vote of confidence from the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Out of 495 deputies present 306 voted in favour, 188 against and there was one abstention .. (For the new government see Turkish Press 6/99).

    [03] Kassoulides interview

Kibris published (15.1.99) an interview given by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kassoulides in which he underligned that the Cyprus problem could be solved on the basis of a federation and not a confederation and noted that the high level agreements call for a federation . He added that through substantive talks within the framework of a bicommunal, bizonal federation, ways can be found to dispel the fears and concerns of both communities.

The decision not to site the S-300 missiles in Cyprus is not a political defeat but a good will gesture that recognizes an opportunity to the efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem Kassoulides stressed. It is also an important decision to help achieve demilitarization and defuse tension through the reduction of troops and arms, he added.

Pointing out that the need is felt to buy missiles to beef up the defenses because of the Greek Cypriots´ sense of insecurity and fear of Turkey´s military on the island, Kassoulides expressed the belief the Cyprus problem could be solved by peaceful rather than military means. It is high time for the two communities to renounce armament and militarization efforts and find a political solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the UN resolutions and summit agreements so as to live in peace, mutual security and comfort in a federal and united Cyprus with a single international identity and membership in the EU.

The Foreign Minister gave a negative answer to a question whether press reports that Cyprus will buy a new and different model of missiles are correct. He added that ``we will first wait to see if the Turkish side gives a positive reply to the UN Security Council resolutions, and I hope there will be a positive response so that we will not to feel the need to order them. But at the moment we should not occupy ourselves with what we are going to buy or not buy. The important thing for us is to think about peace not war''.

Asked what the necessary preconditions are for the sides to come to the table Kassoulides said are that there should be a stop to preconditions and instead discuss the concrete aspects of the Cyprus problem, such as the constitution, territory and security.

Regarding the EU, Kassoulides said that ``We are still waiting for the Turkish Cypriot community to appoint its representatives and join with us the delegation conducting the accession talks with the EU. But the EU cannot wait for us forever. There is the danger that we might miss the train. For the reason we, as the recognized government, will maintain negotiations with the EU. He said that the Government is not negotiating issues that might be to the disadvantage of the Turkish Cypriots in the future. On the contrary, he pointed out, what we are discussing is to the benefit of the whole of Cyprus and as soon as the Turkish Cypriot community accepts our invitation, we well proceed along this parth together. But pending their decision, we have to continue on our course''.

Asked what promises the Americans have made on the Cyprus Problem Kassoulides said that they would work actively for a solution and continued : ``A solution means something acceptable to both the Greek Cypriot of Turkish Cypriots. A solution would not be cut and fitted to the exclusive desires of either Greek Cypriots or Turkish Cypriots. It will be a compromise . Anything else would not be solution but on side´s submission and surrender to the other.''
