    [01] Denktash on settling Kokkina

According to KIBRIS (9.8.98) the issue of the opening of Kokkina, to settlement has come up on the agenda.

Together with Kokkina, the villages of Amadhies, Galini, and Selemani, which were evacuated after the 1974 invasion will become places where the civilian population could settle or visit, the paper adds.

In reply to correspondent´ questions on how the communications will be achieved if Kokkina is opened to settlement, Rauf Denktash said that it will not be a problem, adding: ``There is no problem because we allow the Greek Cypriots to go to Apostolos Andreas Monastery, and they allow us to come to Kokkina. There will be no communication problem. It could be reached by land route.''

When he was told about three other villages in Limnitis region closed to settlement after 1974, Denktash said: ``If there are people willing to go there, they could be opened to settlement. Let everyone go and see these villages, and if there are those who want to return to their villages, or if there are those other than the villagers in the vicinity wanting to go there, they could apply and these villages could be opened to settlement. It is not that these villages have been closed to never reopen again. These are Turkish villages. The villagers moved out from them because in the past there was a threat, a danger, and a military operation. If they want they could now easily return. It actually depends on money and economy, but if an appeal is made, the `government´ will find the money.''

[02] CFE control team led by Turkey monitors units in Armenia

According to Ankara Anatolia News Agency (10.8.98) the multilateral control team, which was headed by Turkey, controlled two military units in Armenia within the framework of the Agreement on the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), it was reported on Monday.

The Secretariat General of the Chief of General Staff said that the multilalteral control team composed of two German, one American and one Italian military officials controlled the two military units which were deployed in the cities of Dilijan and Yerevan in Armenia between 27-31 July 1998.

Meanwhile, another control team from Azerbaijan controlled the Second Troop of Tank Soldiers at Etimesgut, Ankara, and the First Main Jet Base in Eskisehir between 7 July - 3 August 1998 within the framework of the CFE.

The General Secretariat of the General Staff said that the concerned countries abide by the provisions of the CFE and fulfill their responsibilities.

    [03] TDN on Turkish-Bulgarian relations

In an editorial published in the ``Turkish Daily News'' (10.8.98) under the title ``Turkey and Bulgaria after the death of `Papa´ Zhivkov'', Huseyin Bagci writes that ``today, Bulgaria may be the only neighbouring country with which turkey is on truly good terms'' and adds:

``With the death of Zhivkov, Turkish-Bulgarian relations as they existed during the period of Bulgaria´s dictatorship have come to an end. The two countries must now ensure that similar tragic circumstances do not reoccur. As two democratic neighbours, Turkey and Bulgaria can open a new page in their history, based on a common interest and will. While at least being aware that there will be no more dictators, it is now the duty of the historians to evaluate this period, but the politics of both sides should look forward, since it is impossible to control the past.''

    [04] Dentkash meets Ann Hercus

According to KIBRIS (11.8.98) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met yesterday with UN Secretary General´s assistant special envoy in Cyprus Ann Hercus.

No details were known after the meeting.

[05] Albania Parliament Group visiting the occupied area

According to VATAN (11.8.98) a group of Albanian Parliamentarians is currently visiting the occupied areas on the invitation of the pseudo- parliament of the Denktash regime.

The group will stay in the occupied areas until August 17, and will visit Kyrenia, Morphou and Lefka. It will also have various contacts.
