[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash: EU membership impeding solution of Cyprus problemAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (28.11.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has declared that membership in the EU has turned into an insurmountable wall that is preventing the solution of the Cyprus problem. In a statement at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, Denktash said that the whole of Cyprus cannot be admitted into the EU without the Turkish Cypriots' consent, and added: "Half of Cyprus would be left out of the EU. If the Greek Cypriots intend to engage in madness relying on the fact that Europe is on their side, we will be forced to adopt the measures needed against such madness. No one will benefit from this. They would merely be postponing the Cyprus problem for another 100 years."Referring to reports that the accession to the EU may be deferred for two years, Denktash said: "This is an intelligent move. Those who favour the solution of the Cyprus problem will immediately effect such a postponement. EU membership has turned into an insurmountable wall preventing the solution of the Cyprus problem." [02] Denktash assesses contacts, German stand on CyprusAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (30.11.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said that 12 December will be the day the balance between Turkey and Greece will be disrupted. He reiterated that if the balance is changed in favour of Greece, then special relations with Turkey will be developed.Denktash said that like certain other EU member countries, Germany too says that it wants a united Cyprus as a member of the EU. However, Denktash said, "Germany does not want to understand that starting accession talks with the Greek Cypriot side -- which it calls Cyprus -- will impede the unification of Cyprus." Denktash added: "The fact that the EU considers the Greek Cypriot side as the legitimate government of the island prevents the unification. They are telling us that the Cyprus train has taken off and that we must jump in. We tell them that this is not the Cyprus train but the Greek Cypriot train. They tell us that the negotiations may last about four to five years and that we may make up by that time. They do not understand that the minute the Greek Cypriots sit at the negotiating table, they will have more reasons not to (negotiate) with us. That is why the EU is impeding peace." [B] C0MMENTS AND EDITORIALS[03] Levent on "census" resultsSener Levent writing in AVRUPA (29.11.97) under the title "To Question the History" says: What is our stance at the threshold of the 2000?From where we have started and to where we arrived at? Yesterday, the results of the census was the subject of discussion in the community. We did not meet a single person who believed the results announced by the "census committee". No one believes that the Turkish Cypriots are 137 thousand. Are they unfair? Today the Turkish Cypriots are so scarce that one has to look for very diligently to find one in the streets. Which ever door you knock one will come across with a feeling of longing. Everybody is waiting a letter either from London or from Australia or Canada. Where are those friends with whom we grow up together?
