    [01] Gang arrested for forging "TRNC passports"

    According to ORTAM (25.6.97) a five-member gang, which is engaged in providing forged travelling documents, has been arrested.

    ORTAM says that one wing of the gang was operating in Alexandretta, south Turkey, where it was printing forged "TRNC passports" and sending them to the occupied area. The other wing in the occupied area was putting pictures and filling other details in the forged passports and selling them for 12 thousand pounds sterling to Turks wanting to go to the UK.

    It was announced that this way three Turks went to the UK.

    Two more people who were ready to leave for the UK were caught at the occupied Tymbou airport on 24 June. ORTAM says that investigation on the matter is continuing. (MY)

    [02] Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots living abroad encouraged to return on eve of New York talks, says Turkish journalist

    CUMHURIYET's (25.6.97) correspondent Lale Sariibrahimoglu writes that on the eve of the direct talks in New York, Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, with a view to strengthening their negotiating position, are encouraging Greek and Turkish Cypriots living abroad to return to Cyprus.

    To this effect, says CUMHURIYET's correspondent, both sides are providing incentives to those who want to return Cyprus. One of these incentives is to provide housing units to these people. (MY)

    [03] Etkin meets with Azeri MP

    According to KIBRIS (25.6.97) the so-called Foreign and Defence Minister of the pseudostate Taner Etkin had a meeting with Azeri MP Dr. Asaf Hadjiyev who is currently visiting the occupied area.

    Etkin said that he had explained to Hadjiyev the Cyprus problem. (MY)

    [04] "Assembly" delegation in Brussels

    According to KIBRIS (25.6.97) the so-called Assembly Chairman of the pseudostate, Hakki Atun, at the head of a delegation left today for Brussels to follow up the European Parliament's deliberations.

    Atun said that it is the first time that a "parliamentary delegation" will have contacts with EP members. (MY)

    [05] Denktash meets French deputy Under-Secretary

    KIBRIS (25.6.97) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who is currently in Paris, had a meeting with the French Foreign Ministry deputy Under-Secretary, Claude Martin.

    During the meeting the Cyprus problem was discussed. (MY)
