[01] Denktash leaves for Paris to open exhibition, give lecture

According to TRT (17:00 hours, 22.6.97) Rauf Denktash has claimed that the greatest obstacle to the solution of the Cyprus problem is the fact that the Greek Cypriot "sector" is recognized by the world as the legitimate government of Cyprus.

Denktash left Istanbul for Paris last Sunday to attend the inauguration of a photography exhibition, which includes his own photographs, and to deliver a lecture. In a predeparture statement at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport, Denktash said that during his contacts in Paris, he will explain once again the realities in Cyprus and the reasons for the absence of a solution on the island. Denktash described the Greek Cypriot application for EU membership as a political move.

[02] Holbrooke: Solution in the framework of one unitary sovereign state

In a joint interview to Mehmet Ali Birand and Alexis Papahellas, published in SABAH (24.6.97), US President's special Cyprus representative, Richard Holbrooke, supported the need for a solution to the Cyprus problem that will carry broader importance in securing stability in the region.

Holbrooke also said that through the preliminary talks with the two sides he has established that there exist deep differences of opinion, adding that he is not certain that these will be overcome in their entity.. He precluded any connection of the Cyprus problem to Greek-Turkish relations and specifically to the Aegean issue, stressing that none of his interlocutors in Athens and Ankara wishes any connection of the Cyprus problem with other issues.

He added that due to the differences of opinion between the two sides he is not suggesting a Dayton type solution for Cyprus, noting that "the two sides are not ready for such thing". He did not preclude, however, the eventuality that such type of a solution might take place towards the end of the course of negotiations when, as he put it, "the differences of opinion get less".

What matters, Holbrooke said, is the need for a solution in the framework of one unitary sovereign state. The one sovereignty solution, he said, in the framework of a bizonal, bicommunal federation "seems inevitable".

Mr. Holbrooke also supported freedom of movement on the island, saying that "there was freedom of movement prior to 1974".

He concluded that a stable government in Turkey is a prerequisite for the success of any effort for a Cyprus solution. (EF)

[03] Denktash to meet French European Affairs Minister

According to illegal Bayrak radio (24.6.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who is currently in Paris, will be meeting today with European Affairs Minister Mr. Pierre Moscovici.

He will then give a lecture at the French Institute for International Relations on the Cyprus problem.

[04] Turkish Cypriot journalist praises well-being of Turkish Cypriots in the free areas

SERTAC GORGUNER, writing in ORTAM (24.6.97) about the joint trip they (Turkish Cypriot journalists) had in the free areas with their Greek Cypriot colleagues, describes in a vivid manner the cities and tourist resorts that are of a high standard, clean and well maintained.

He also refers to Turkish Cypriots who are living in the free areas and to their living conditions. He says that Turkish Cypriots, despite the fact that they are away from their families who are living in the occupied area, prefer to stay in the free areas because they enjoy economic and social well being.
