[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] DENKTASH MEETS EGYPTIAN AMBASSADOR TO CYPRUSAccording to KIBRIS (15.5.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had a meeting yesterday with the Egyptian Ambassador to Cyprus, Muhammed Fadel-el- Kadi.KIBRIS reports that the meeting was one of the routine meetings with the foreign envoys who are acredited to Cyprus. During the meeting the Cyprus problem was discussed. (MY) [02] LAST MINUTE CABINET APPOINTMENTS IN TURKEYAccording to Turkish Daily News (14/5/97), the Turkish Government appointed on Tuesday evening Ismail Karakugu and Ali Riza Gonul as new cabinet members to replace Yildirim Aktuna and Yalim Erez who had resigned two weeks ago. The appointment of two True Path Party (DYP) deputies as ministers of health and industry came at the very last minute before the period for the appointment was to expire according to the Constitution. Karakugu, deputy DYP chairman will serve as health minister while Ali Riza Gonul, one of the DYP parliamentary group leaders, became the new minister of industry.[03] DENKTASH REACTS TO PROPOSED US HOUSE BILL ON CYPRUSAccording to KIBRIS (15/5/97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, commenting on the bill submitted to the US House of Representatives on the Cyprus problem by Benjamin Gilman, Chairman of the US House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committee, has said that he will be writing to Mr. Gilman telling him that passing the bill will have no contribution to the settlement of the Cyprus problem."I will write to Mr. Gilman. I do not think it will change the result. However, we have to make our voice heard", claimed Denktash. The bill supports President Clerides' demilitarization proposal and the establishment of a multinational force to maintain security on the island. It also supports the idea that Cyprus' entry into the EU will act as a catalyst in settling the Cyprus problem. (MY) [04] TURKISH CYPRIOT TEACHERS UNION SUPPORTS JOINT CONCERTAccording to VATAN (15/5/97) the Turkish Cypriot Teachers Union (KTOS) has declared that joint activities are steps taken for peace.The KTOS General Secretary Cemal Ozyigit said in a statement yesterday, said that the activities between the two communities are steps taken for peace and they should be supported. He said that the concert, to be given by Greek singer Sakis Rouvas and Turkish Singer Burak Kut will contribute to the coalescence of youth in both communities who do not know each other. Ozyigit added that this concert came on the agenda while a process of normalization is going on in Cyprus. He said that chauvnist forces on both sides, with their stance, are extending support to each other. [05] LETTERS ARE OPENED IN THE OCCUPIED AREAYENIDUZEN (15.5.97) reports under the banner headline "Precluding Freedom of Information. Letters are being opened" says that Ibrahim Denizer a university student has sent a letter to the US President Bill Clinton. However, "unidentified officials" have opened the letter and the contend was read. The officials" who did not like the letter referred the issue to the "police".The paper goes on and reports that Ibrahim Denizer told the paper that the "plaincloth policemen", searched his house, arrested him, confiscated his identity card and the passport. He said that he was forbiden to leave the occupied area. YENIDUZEN quoting the so-called director of the postal services Yazar Ozcemoglu says that, he is unaware of the case and that it is a crime to open a posted letter. The paper then wonders who opened the letter, and whether other letters are being opened and urges the occupation "official" to clarify this issue as soon as possible.
