[A] NEWS ITEMS
[01] OCCUPIED AREA OPPOSES CLERIDES-DENKTASH MEETING IN NEW YORK
YENIDUZEN (14.5.97) reports that the occupied area has reacted against the
UN scenario to bring together President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader
Rauf Denktash for a direct dialogue.
YENIDUZEN reports that UN officials plan to bring President Clerides and
Denktash together in New York between 23-27 June during the UN General
Assembly's Rio Follow up meeting.
On June 23 President Clerides will go to New York and on June 25 he will
address the General Assembly. YENIDUZEN quotes "a TRNC high level official"
who claimed that President Clerides will attend the UN General Assembly as
the Cyprus President and he will make a "show" there. He also claimed that
under these circumstances one should not consider holding such a meeting.
The "official" also said that this arrangement is in accordance with the UN
Secretary General's good offices mission, and that until now they have not
received a proposal from the UN to this effect. (MY)
[02] DENKTASH MEETS CANADA'S CYPRUS REPRESENTATIVE
According to YENI DUZEN (14.5.97) Denktash had a meeting yesterday with
Canada's special Cyprus representative Michael Bell.
Mr. Bell also met with the Republican Turkish Party's (RTP) leader Mehmet
Ali Talat. (MY)
[03] MUSTAFA AKINCI SUPPORTS ROUVAS-KUT CONCERT, SAYS HE WILL ATTEND
According to ORTAM (14.5.97) the leader of the Communal Liberation Party
(CLP) Mustafa Akinci has said that they will attend the Rouvas-Kut concert
to be held on 19 May. Akinci said: "We see that some circles in the Greek
Cypriot side oppose the concert. On our side the BRT, with its broadcasts,
is trying to sow the seeds of fear in order to discourage people from going
to the concert. This is wrong and does not serve any positive aim.
Sabotaging the concert by sowing the seeds of fear is as wrong as resorting
to provocative actions.
The youth from both sides are mature enough to attend a joint concert in a
civilized manner. I have no doubt about it.
Of course, the Cyprus problem will not be solved through holding concerts.
However, one should not underestimate the positive contribution of the
joint cultural activities on the way to a lasting peace. As CLP, we will
take part and support this positive initiative of the UN".
