[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Serdar Denktash repeats threat that Varosha will be settled if missiles deployedAccording to Anatolia agency (1540 hours, 28/3/97), so-called deputy prime minister and state minister of the pseudostate Serdar Denktash said on Friday if the Greek Cypriot side purchases S-300 missiles, then the pseudostate will open Varosha (Maras) to settlement.Addressing a statement at Ataturk Airport before leaving for Moscow to attend a tourism fair, Serdar Denktash said Russia is a new market for the "TRNC" in respect of tourism, adding that the pseudostate can attract Russian tourists, who can proceed to "TRNC" from Turkey in the coming years. Responding to a question about the S-300 missiles, Denktash said "in spite of all warnings, Greek Cypriots tell they will purchase these missiles. In that case, the TRNC will open Maras to settlement, which was kept closed for 23 years." Denktash said the only sector that will contribute to "TRNC" economy is tourism and in this respect the opening of Varosha into settlement is very important. [02] Anatolia agency reports Clerides-Denktash meeting likely inJuly According to illegal Radio (0600 hours, 29/3/97) it has been reported that the summit meeting between President Glafcos Clerides and Rauf Denktash may be held in New York in July.According to an Anatolia Agency report originating from New York, Denktash will meet with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Geneva on 10 or 11 April. In an earlier statement, Denktash had confirmed that he would meet with Annan but had not supplied a date. [03] Denktash meets US AmbassadorAll papers of 29/3/97 report on a meeting Denktash had with US Ambassador to Cyprus, Kenneth Brill. There was no statement after the meeting.[04] Two more passenger planes for the "Cyprus Turkish Airlines"BIRLIK (29/3/97) reports that two passenger MD-90 aircraft, that the so- called "Cyprus Turkish Airlines" bought from the United States, were to arrive in Istanbul last Friday.According to the paper, the two planes will this week be flown to the occupied area by their American pilots who will train Turkish pilots for a period of one to two months.
