[01] Turkish Assembly Speaker to Attend Parliamentary Meeting in Athens
According to TRT (1800 hours, 26/3/97) Mustafa Kalemli, speaker of the
Turkish Grand National Assembly, has called on General Ismail Hakki
Karadayi, chief of the General Staff.
In a statement during the meeting, Kalemli recalled that he recently
conducted a 10-day visit to the Central Asian Turkic republics, adding that
a plane provided by the General StaffÕs Office was used during the visit.
Noting that he wants to thank Karadayi, Kalemli said he will also give him
the five-volume report prepared in connection with the Central Asian
republics. In reply to a question, Kalemli stated that the Greek assembly
speaker especially invited him to attend the Mediterranean countries
parliamentary speakers meeting to be held in Athens and that he accepted
the invitation. ÇI believe that a new gesture on our part at the
parliamentary level, to be added to the beautiful act started by our chief
of staff on the occasion of the Greek national day, will create a soft
corridor in Turkish-Greek relations and constitute a good beginningÈ,
Kalemli said.
[02] 34 banks operating in the occupied area
KIBRIS (28.3.97) refarts that the occupied area has become a heaven for
Banks. The paper reports that the so-called ÇCouncil of MinistersÈ of the
preudostate has approved the application of eight more merchant Banks to
operate in the occupied area.
With the new approvals the number of Banks operating in the occupied area
has reached 34.
Of the eight new Banks three are established by foreigners and five by
Turkish Cypriots.
