[01] Transfer of remains of Denktash's mother seen as a message of no hope for a settlement

"Is it possible that we did not understand the message Denktash wanted to convey to us by bringing his mother's remains to the north?

Or is it that he wants to say... `There. It is time to understand that I have transferred my mother's remains here.

There will be no agreement, neither federation nor any other settlement. Do not expect anything. There is no hope'!!

Yesterday I heard some people talking and saying: `Yes, he is our president, we elected him. However, is it only his mother who is valuable? Aren't all mothers valuable?

He used his authority and power and brought over his mother's remains...

What should we do?

Should we start a general mobilization to bring the remains of our loved ones here?

Our esteemed President made us feel sorry'!

[02] Inal Batu on the issue of a multinational force

Commenting on the report by Athens daily ELEFTEROTYPIA that Turkey has put forward the condition that 10 thousand Turkish troops should be stationed on the island if a multinational force is to be stationed in Cyprus, Ambassador Batu categorically denied the report, and said that the real aim of the report is to confuse the minds and create speculation.

"The question of a multinational force could be on the agenda", said Batu, "after reaching peace in Cyprus" and added that Turkey and the "TRNC" continue to consider the ideas included in the Ghali Set of Ideas.

He said that as in the case of the 1960 Treaties, once peace is reached, a number of Turkish and Greek troops would be stationed on the island and the UN Peace-keeping Force will carry out "monitoring" duties.

Batu stressed that "neither Turkey nor the occupied area share the views expressed in the said paper. It is a lie and a Greek Cypriot ploy", he claimed.

[03] No trace of the British citizen who disappeared near Bellapais

On 7 March, 1997, Brian McManus left his home for a walk in the area of Bellapais with his two dogs and he is missing since then. All efforts to find him dead or alive have proved fruitless.

People living in the area said that most probably Brian Mcmanus was killed and his body thrown away somewhere.

Some people say that Mcmanus' two dogs were also killed, otherwise they would have been found during the search or would have returned home alone.

[04] Turkey to donate barley and wheat to the occupied area

KIBRIS, quoting the so-called Minister of Agriculture of the pseudostate Kenan Akin, who is one of the killers of Isaac Isaac last August in Dherinia, says that Turkey's Minister of Agriculture and Village Affairs, Musa Demirci, will be arriving in the occupied area in the coming weeks.

[05] Eroglu to Turkey; Will ask for funds from economic protocol

In a statement at occupied Tymbou airport before his departure, Eroglu said that even though his visit is linked to the award-giving ceremony, since Ankara is the political capital of Turkey, he will be meeting with President Demirel, Prime Minister Erbakan, State Minister Gul, and other political leaders.

Eroglu said that after the TUSIAD ceremony he will deliver a speech on the latest economic and political developments in Cyprus.

He stressed that he will raise the issue of the damages caused by the recent drought and frost in Turkey and ask that the economic cooperation protocol signed with Turkey be activated. He pointed out that resources are needed to revitalize the various economic sectors and to overcome the current bottlenecks in the economy.

According to TRT (16:00 hours, 18.3.97) in his statement at Ankara airport, Eroglu said:

"I intend to meet with government officials, exchange views on implementing the protocol between our countries, and convey the concerns of the TRNC while I am in Ankara".

Meanwhile, according to TRT (18:00 hours, 18.3.97), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel received Eroglu at the Cankaya Mansion yesterday evening. According to a statement issued by the Press Center of the President's Office, Demirel said Turkey will continue to extend aid to the "TRNC" and its Turkish Cypriot kinsmen in all areas. Eroglu, in turn, said that he conveyed to Demirel some of his views in connection with the implementation of the economic cooperation protocol signed with Turkey on 3 January.

[06] Remains of Denktash' mother reburied in occupied area

Denktash has asked President Glafcos Clerides to allow the transfer of his mother's remains from the Turkish cemetery in Paphos and to be carried over to the occupied area. President Clerides accepted this request.

The remains were taken to the Turkish cemetery in occupied Nicosia under the supervision of the UN peace force.
