[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash claims close to 70 percent of Varosha belonged to WaqfAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (16:30 hours, 17.3.97) Rauf Denktash has claimed that close to 70 percent of the land in occupied Varosha (Maras) belonged to the religious foundation Waqf and in line with this status it could not be handed over or sold to anybody. Denktash said that a lot of Waqf lands had been "occupied" by the Greek Cypriots during the EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) period, even though these areas were handed over to the Turkish Cypriots in courts. Denktash issued this statement during a meeting he held with the WAqf Administration Council headed by Ilker Nejat.During his address at the meeting, Denktash said that the Waqf Administration, which was a fundamental organization dating back to the Ottoman period, constituted proof of the 400-year-old Turkish Cypriot existence in Cyprus. Alleging that important properties belonging to the Waqf were handed over to the Greek Cypriots for schools "during the arbitrary administration of the British rule despite legislations", Denktash further claimed: "The areas belonging to the Waqf in Maras were occupied by the Greek Cypriots during the EOKA period even though the Turkish Cypriots had won in court". [02] Eroglu: Direct talks must begin with Greek CypriotsAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 17.3.97, so-called prime minister Dervis Eroglu has said that for a solution to be reached to the Cyprus problem, direct talks must begin with the Greek Cypriots.Eroglu was speaking following his weekly routine meeting with Rauf Denktash and Serdar Denktash, "state minister and deputy prime minister". In a statement after the 30-minute meeting, Eroglu said that they discussed mainly foreign policy issues, and that Denktash briefed them on the resumption of the indirect talks and the stand adopted during those talks. Erolgu said that the solution must be based on current realities. He alleged that an agreement must be reached by taking into consideration the rights gained by the 1960 Constitution and the current geographical situation. He said that with goodwill, the Turkish Cypriots want the resumption not of the indirect talks, but of the direct talks. He claimed that the EU attitude is opposed to these principles and is disturbing the Turkish Cypriot side. Eroglu stated that the Turkish Cypriots are opposed to every step that will turn them into a minority on the island. He charged: "We are a separate people and today we live under the roof of a separate state."
