Noting that securing the economic development of the pseudostate is among Turkey's goals, Erbakan added: "Compared with the past, we now have a much better opportunity to extend aid."Erbakan called on Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash at the hotel where he is staying in Ankara. In a statement prior to the meeting, Erbakan claimed that Turkey wants peace and tranquility in Cyprus and that "inappropriate provocations" will serve no one's interests. Noting that the security of the pseudostate is among Turkey's goals, Erbakan alleged that Turkey is the guarantee of peace and tranquility in the occupied area. Noting that the economic development of the "TRNC" is among Turkey's goals vis-a-vis the island, Erbakan said that Denktash' visit at a time when Turkey's budget is being prepared is most appropriate. "Now we have a much better opportunity to help the TRNC in its development. We will achieve a major accomplishment such as preparing a balanced budget. Just as we have activated the economic potential of our country and are going to bring prosperity to our country without increasing taxes or prices, and just as we have good news for our people every week, so will we make great contributions to the economic development of the TRNC", Erbakan said. Erbakan stated that Turkey wants to solve its problems with Greece through a dialogue and in a peaceful manner. In turn, Denktash claimed that "those who want to portray the Greek Cypriots as a fully sovereign republic in Cyprus and who encourage its EU membership do not serve peace." He also claimed that the world wants to transform Cyprus into a Greek Cypriot republic. Furthermore, KIBRIS (1.10.96) reports on the Erbakan - Denktash meeting in Ankara and writes that Denktash stated: "The Greek Cypriots are not the legal government of the island. The Greek Cypriots do not represent the Turkish Cypriots. Western countries should realize this reality. In Cyprus there are two separate republics, two separate administrations." [02] Turkish Cypriot papers on Simitis' visit to CyprusTurkish Cypriot papers of 1/10/96 report on Greek Prime Minister Costas Simits' visit to Cyprus under the following headlines:BIRLIK: "Simitis goes to South Cyprus today. Display of Greek-Greek Cypriot strength". ORTAM: "Simitis goes to South Cyprus today". YENI DUZEN: "Simitis is coming". HALKIN SESI: "Greek Cypriot-Greek provocation! The Greek Premier comes today to South Cyprus. Common exercise under the name `Nikiforos - Toxotis'. Greek commandos in South Cyprus." KIBRIS: "Simitis today in the South. He comes to the island for a second time in a month. The purpose is to provoke." VATAN: "Simits today in the South. Display of Greek - Greek Cypriot strength in order to challenge Turkey. Common exercise under the name 'Nikiforos - Toxotis'. Greek Commandos in South Cyprus." [03] Denktash in good health after checkup in AnkaraAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 30.9.96) Rauf Denktash is reported to be good health. He underwent a medical checkup in Ankara. He underwent a blood analysis and then proceeded to the Nuclear Medicine Department at the Cebeci Medical School for a scan.Speaking to reporters after his checkup, which lasted approximately one hour, Denktash announced that he is in good health. [04] On the transferring of Russian tanks to CyprusA ZAMAN article (29.9.96) reporting on the transferring of Russian tanks to Cyprus, says that the pseudostate's "Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense officials" have informed the paper's correspondent that "if the Greek Cypriots escalate tension on the island as a result of their increased firepower it will harm all of Cyprus".They claimed: "The Greek Cypriots are taking a risk that will harm them. They have turned their part of the country into an arms depot and created the psychology of war. That will harm tourism there." [05] Denktash "challenges" President CleridesAccording to Turkish Daily News (1.10.96), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash "urged" President Glafcos Clerides to declare publicly that "he has stopped his preoccupation with converting Cyprus into a Greek Cypriot republic."Denktash, while in Ankara, said that President Clerides, in his memoir entitled "My Deposition", underlines that the Cyprus problem is a result of the Greek Cypriot preoccupation with converting Cyprus into a Greek Cypriot state and the Turkish Cypriot "preoccupation" with defeating any such effort. "Now, I challenge Mr. Clerides to say publicly that he has stopped his preoccupation", Denktash said, adding that he was convinced that President Clerides would not do so and could not do so "because of his false pretence that he represents that `republic'". [06] Suspect killer of Olaf Palme lives and works in the occupied areaCUMHURIYET (1.10.96) reports that Bertil Wedin, the neonazi Swede, who is said to be involved in the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olaf Palme, is living in the occupied area and is the producer of the weekly english program of illegal Bayrak Radio and TV.
