[01] President Papadopoulos receives letter from US President
The President of the Republic, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, has received a
letter from US President Mr George W. Bush, to which he will reply,
Government Spokesman Mr Kypros Chrysostomides announced after a meeting of
the National Council on Monday. Mr Chrysostomides said that the National
Council - the President's top advisory body on the Cyprus problem - had
made an in-depth assessment of the current situation as well as future
prospects regarding the effort to find a settlement of the Cyprus
issue. "The National Council unanimously reiterated the position that the
Greek Cypriot side is ready to resume negotiations on the basis of the
Annan plan in order to find a functional and viable solution before 1 May
2004, so that a reunited Cyprus would join the European Union", the
Government Spokesman noted.
Mr Chrysostomides added that President Papadopoulos had briefed Council
members on the latest developments concerning the Cyprus issue, the results
of the Intergovernmental Conference dealing with a Constitution for the EU
and the UN Secretary-General's letter on the issue of missing persons.
[02] House President visits Canada and Cuba
The President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Christofias,
departed yesterday for Canada where he will attend a Conference of the
House Presidents of the Commonwealth member states. While in Canada, Mr
Christofias will speak at gatherings of overseas Cypriots in Toronto and
Montreal and will hold various meetings. After the end of the Conference Mr
Christofias will leave for Cuba to head a parliamentary delegation that
will visit the country at the invitation of the Speaker of the Cuban
Parliament. The delegation, which will leave Cyprus on 12 January, will
comprise President of the Democratic Rally Mr Nicos Anastasiades, AKEL
Parliamentary Leader Mr Nicos Katsourides, Democratic Party Parliamentary
Spokesman Mr Nicos Cleanthous, President of the Movement of Social
Democrats EDEK Mr Yiannakis Omirou, and President of the Fighting
Democratic Movement ADIK Mr Dinos Michaelides.
The House President and the members of the delegation will meet with senior
officials of the Cuban government and parliament and will visit various
foundations in Havana. The delegation will return to Cyprus on 17
January.
