Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 04-01-05Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>[01] Bush and Simitis exchange correspondence on CyprusAccording to a Cyprus News Agency report on January 2 2004, US President George Bush has sent a letter to Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis, noting that 2004 will be an historic year for Cyprus as it will enter the European Union, and stressed to both sides on the island that now is the time for action. In a reply, Simitis notes that precious time has been wasted because of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash's intransigence and his unwillingness to enter substantial and constructive negotiations on Cyprus, and because of the lack of will on the part of Ankara to exert the necessary pressure to yield results.[02] Consumer price index for the month of December, 2003The Consumer Price Index for December 2003 decreased by 1,08 units or 0,92% to 116,51 units compared to 117,59 in November 2003. This is mainly due to decreases in the prices of motor-cars, potatoes and certain fresh vegetables. Increases have been recorded in the prices of bread and fresh lamb.The rate of increase of the Index for December 2003 compared to December 2002 was 2,49% while for the period January-December 2003 the CPI recorded an increase of 4,14% compared to the corresponding period of 2002.
