[01] No official statement by Ankara on a Turkish plan for Cyprus solution,
says Spokesman
The Government Spokesman, Mr Kypros Chrysostomides, has noted that there
was no official statement by the Turkish government regarding intentions to
present its own plan on the Cyprus problem or undertake any initiative for
the solution of the problem. Commenting yesterday on a report by Turkish
mainland newspaper Cumhuriyet regarding a Turkish plan for a Cyprus
solution and on statements by Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul that a
solution of the Cyprus problem was necessary, Mr Chrysostomides pointed out
that Ankara was merely trying to tone down negative impressions it had
created within the international community due to its intransigent stance
on Cyprus. He explained that the Turkish government's efforts were being
made in the wake of constant statements by European officials that the
absence of a solution of the Cyprus problem could pose a serious obstacle
to Turkey's European ambitions.
"What is expected is a change of stance by Turkey so that attempts to
resolve the Cyprus problem on the basis of the Annan Plan by 1 May 2004 can
move forward", the Government Spokesman noted. He added that the Cyprus
Government was anticipating a possible meeting between the Turkish
government and Turkish Cypriot politicians, and noted the Government's
readiness to express its positions once the Turkish side would make an
official statement.
[02] Third volume of "Census of Establishments 2000" report published
The Statistical Service of the Republic has announced the publication of
the third volume of the report with the results of the "Census of
Establishments 2000". The report gives information on the distribution of
the employed population in Cyprus by occupation and employment status, that
is, the number of employers, self-employed and employees (monthly and
weekly paid). In addition, results for part-time employment and foreign
workers at the time of the Census are also presented.
The publication is available for sale at the Government Printing Office in
Nicosia for C£12,00 per copy.
