The President of the Republic, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, had a telephone conversation yesterday with the Iranian President, Dr Sayed Muhammad Khatami, to whom he conveyed sincere condolences on behalf of his Government and the people of Cyprus for the calamity that has hit Iran and the thousands of victims of the recent earthquake. President Papadopoulos informed his Iranian counterpart about the Cyprus Government's decision to offer financial and humanitarian aid, amounting to 100.000 dollars, to the earthquake-struck area in the city of Bam. On Saturday, Mr Papadopoulos received the Iranian Ambassador to Cyprus, Dr Seyed Reza Hadj-Zargarbashi, and asked to be informed about the tragic consequences of the devastating earthquake that hit Iran last Friday. President Papadopoulos told the Iranian Ambassador that Cyprus would offer aid amounting to 100.000 dollars to Iran, to help alleviate some of the destructive effects of the earthquake. He also informed the Ambassador about the Government's willingness to send in rescue teams and relief supplies to the earthquake- struck area. The Iranian Ambassador thanked President Papadopoulos for the Cyprus Government's prompt offer to help and said he would inform Mr Papadopoulos on the kind of assistance the Iranian government needed. In addition, the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Christofias, has sent a letter of condolences to his Iranian counterpart, Mr Mehdl Karoubi, expressing deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences on behalf of the members of the House to Iran's political leadership and to the families of the thousands of victims of the destructive quake.
