[01] Iacovou: No developments until next Turkish Cypriot " elections"
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr George Iacovou, said that various
countries keep reiterating that as long as Mr Denktash is the interlocutor
of the Turkish Cypriot side for a solution to the Cyprus problem, then
things are difficult and everybody refers to the period following the so
called " elections" in the Turkish Cypriot community. Mr Iacovou was
speaking to the press after a meeting he had yesterday with two American
Congressmen, currently on a visit to Cyprus. Moreover, the Foreign Minister
pointed out that if the so-called "opposition" in the Turkish Cypriot
community wins the " elections", then a new interlocutor will replace Mr
Denktash. Diplomatic representatives of almost all countries believe that
parties which support Mr Denktash will lose the "elections", Mr Iacovou
added. Asked to comment on the content of a letter sent to him by his
American counterpart, Mr Iacovou said that he could neither confirm nor
deny the content of this letter. What I would like to underline is the US
continuing interest in a solution to the Cyprus problem before May 1st 2004,
so that a united Cyprus can join the EU, Mr Iacovou said adding that this
position was expressed to him by the US Secretary of State, Mr Colin Powell
during their meeting this year in Washington.
[02] President Papadopoulos receives Mayor of Morphou
The President of the Republic, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, received yesterday
the Mayor of Morphou, Mr Charalambos Pittas, and the Municipal Council, who
were accompanied by three MPs. During the meeting Mr Pittas briefed
President Papadopoulos on the content of a resolution, which was approved
by the Morphou Municipal Council on the 29th anniversary of the occupation
of the town by the Turkish troops, and was handed to the embassies of the
five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
In a statement after the meeting Morphou Mayor Charalambos Pittas stressed
that Morphou residents are determined to continue their struggle until
final vindication. The Mayor of Morphou and the Municipal Council were also
received by the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris
Christofias.
