[01] UN Permanent Representative denounces Denktash regime regarding human rights violations

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Ambassador Mr Sotos Zackheos addressed a letter to five human rights organizations (Human Rights Watch, Committee to Protect Journalists, Overseas Press Club, Amnesty International, and Freedom House) in New York, in which he denounced the continuing suppression of "free speech and expression within the Turkish Cypriot community". He also condemned the Turkish Cypriot regime's bringing citizens before military courts, which unjustly convict and imprison them.

Specifically, Mr Zackheos referred to the fact that members of the Turkish Teacher's Trade Union "were on trial due to their participation in a bi- communal event".

Ambassador Zackheos also referred to the fact that journalists working at the Turkish Cypriot newspaper "AFRIKA" had been arrested for "spying" and this had led to the strong condemnation of the occupation regime from politicians overseas.

Concluding, Mr Zackheos made reference to the fact that on 9 July, after being briefed by the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr Alvaro de Soto on the ongoing Cyprus talks, the members of the Security Council expressed disappointment that, despite the personal involvement of the UN Secretary-General Mr Kofi Annan, including his visit to the island in May, progress remained "disappointingly slow" and the June target date for agreement had not been met. The Council members noted that the Turkish Cypriot side had been less constructive in its approach. The Council underscored the need for the Turkish side in particular to move in the right direction.

[02] New Commander of the Cyprus National Guard

Following the of the Commander of Cyprus' National Guard, Lieutenant General Evangelos Florakis, along with four other army officers, on 10 July, the Ministerial Council appointed, on 12 July, a new commander, based on the provisions of the Law on National Guard of 1964 to 2000.

The new commander is Lieutenant General Athanasios Nikolodemos.
