Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 02-07-11Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Thursday, 11 July 2002CONTENTS[01] COE Committee of Ministers examine Loizidou case against TurkeyThe Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, during yesterday's session on human rights, continued the examination of the case of Titina Loizidou vs. Turkey regarding Turkey's non-compliance with the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).During the session, Turkey restated its positions and set preconditions, which the Committee continued to find unacceptable. Turkey's representative articulated his country's wish to postpone the examination of the case for six months in order to continue its efforts. The Cypriot, as well as the Greek representations refuted the Turkish argument and insisted on Turkey's compliance with ECHR's decision the soonest possible. The Committee rejected the Turkish request for a six-month postponement and decided to continue the examination of the case next October. Additionally, the Committee asked of the Turkish representative to give information, during the next meeting, regarding the efforts of Turkey. [02] Cyprus and the Netherlands sign an agreement on Social InsuranceAn agreement on Social Insurance was signed yesterday between Cyprus and the Netherlands. The Ambassador of Cyprus to the Netherlands Mr Euripides Evriviades signed the agreement on behalf of Cyprus, while the Director General of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment Mr Kuipers signed on behalf of the Netherlands.Speaking after the signing, Ambassador Evriviades inter alia said the signing was the beginning of a new era, in a sector that had not yet been institutionally regulated, that would enhance the already excellent relations between the two countries. "The signing reflects the two countries' commitment to the welfare of their people", he added. The Cypriot Ambassador expressed certainty that the agreement would reinforce the already strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, in view of Cyprus' EU accession. For his part, the Dutch official expressed satisfaction and stressed that the agreement was the completion of efforts to ensure the rights of employees in Cyprus and the Netherlands, and hope that new perspectives would open in the relations between the two countries.
