[01] EU Commissioner in Cyprus to discuss health and consumer protection issues

Cyprus is making very good progress in matters of health and consumer policy and its legislation will be in place well before the likely date of Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU), European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy David Byrne said here yesterday, after a meeting with the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Nicos Rolandis.

The Commissioner, on a brief visit to the island for talks with the government, also said he was pleased to see that Cyprus is making very good progress in its harmonisation effort.

On the basis of the progress achieved in this field, it would seem that Cyprus gain entry into the EU sooner rather than later, he added.

He expressed the hope that the impasse in negotiations on the Cyprus problem will be overcome and that the island's efforts to join the EU will help solve the Cyprus problem.

[02] Cyprus protests to the UN about the Tziakourmas case

Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, has protested to the United Nations upon instructions of the Cyprus government regarding the so-called "ruling" by the illegal court in the Turkish- occupied area of Cyprus on 26 April 2001, "sentencing" Greek Cypriot Panicos Tziakourmas to six months' imprisonment.

In a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, on 8 May, Mr Zackheos notes that "the government of the Republic of Cyprus considers this so- called 'ruling' as non-existent, illegal and contrary to every notion of legality".

He notes, moreover, that the case underscores the illegality of the regime established in the occupied part of Cyprus, which is maintained by the use of force, where even innocence, guilt or the general sense of justice are subjugated to political considerations.

"By abducting and illegally sentencing a Cypriot national whose only crime was his misfortune to be a Greek Cypriot waiting to collect Turkish Cypriots who worked for him in the Government controlled area, the occupying power and its subordinate local administration have demonstrated once more their well-known policies in Cyprus, which are none other than the forced separation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, in order to promote Turkey's partitionist aims on the island", he said.

[03] UN Secretary-General meets with Greek Foreign Minister

The UN Secretary-General had a meeting on 8 May with the Greek Foreign Minister, Mr George Papandreou.

During the meeting the UN Secretary-General expressed his desire to continue to be of assistance to the parties in Cyprus through his mission of good offices, and his belief that a fair and viable comprehensive settlement can be reached through negotiations. He also spoke of the importance of Greece's support for his mission of good offices.
