[01] Presentation of credentials

The Cuban government and people have consistently supported, still support and will continue to support the fair Cypriot cause in finding a solution to the Cyprus question, Cuba's new Ambassador to Cyprus, Mr German Blanco Pujol said yesterday.

Presenting his credentials to President Glafcos Clerides, the new Cuban ambassador said that Cyprus and Cuba although geographically distant, share many things in common which contribute to the strengthening of the firm and supportive relations between them and bring them closer together.

He also stressed that both countries are working for their economic, technical and cultural development and for better living, education, health and welfare standards of their people.

Mr Pujol also referred to the fair struggle of the Cypriot people for peace and underlined that all progressive and peace-loving people around the world have always extended their support to Cyprus' just cause.

For his part President Clerides said that Cyprus and Cuba enjoy excellent relations and have strong historical bonds as active members of the Non- Aligned movement, adding that between the people of the two nations there is a mutual respect based on their struggle for independence, national sovereignty and human dignity, which continue even today.

He also expressed the gratitude of the people of Cyprus for the continuous and principled support of the government of Cuba to all UN resolutions concerning Cyprus and to all the efforts to find a just solution to the Cyprus problem.

Referring to the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, the President said the Cyprus government and the Greek Cypriot community have the political will to negotiate a just and functional solution, which will serve the interests of all the people of Cyprus.

He stressed however, that "our side is not prepared to accept any settlement which would be contrary to the relevant UN resolutions, would violate international law, would disregard the human rights of the people of Cyprus, and would legalize the results of the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the subsequent occupation of the northern part of the Republic of Cyprus".

[02] Agreement signed for the participation of Cyprus in EU community programmes

The final text of the agreement for the approval of the terms and conditions of Cyprus' participation in European Union programmes in the fields of vocational training, education and youth was signed yesterday in Brussels between the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus.

The agreement was signed by the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the European Union Ambassador Theophylou on behalf of Cyprus and by the Permanent Representative of Sweden, Ambassador Gunnar Lund, in his capacity as President of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union Council, on behalf of the European Union.

Under the agreement Cyprus will continue to participate in three programmes, Leonardo da Vinci, Socrates and Youth for Europe.

The Leonardo da Vinci programme covers vocational training, career orientation, distance learning and training, and is designed for enterprises, social partners, training organizations, universities, state authorities research centres, intergovernmental research / study centres and placement programmes and exchanges.

The Socrates programme aims at the improvement in the quality of education at all levels (primary, secondary, tertiary). At the tertiary level exchanges of students and staff are encouraged, as well as the development of joint European programmes, while at school level the main aim is cooperation between schools of different countries.

The Youth for Europe programme aims at bringing together young people from different countries in order to jointly tackle the problems of youth. Funding is provided for exchanges, support of non-profit making organizations and cooperation between national institutions.
