[01] House of Representatives approves state budget

The House of Representatives passed yesterday, after a long debate that lasted well after midnight, the state budget for the year 2001 with right- wing Democratic Rally, centrist Democratic Party and the United Democrats voting for the budget, left-wing AKEL abstaining and the Movement of Social Democrats voting against. AKEL and the Social Democrats voted in favour of expenditure for defence and refugees.

The 2001 budget provides for 2,106 million pounds in expenditure and 1,553 million in revenue, leaving a budget deficit of 553 million pounds (1 Cyprus pound is trading at about 1.6 US dollars).

Of the 56 MPs constituting parliament, 52 were present for voting, of which 30 voted for, five against and 17 abstained.

The rate of growth is estimated at 4.8 percent in real terms, unemployment is set at 3.3 percent and inflation is expected to be around 4.2 per cent.

[02] Presentation of Credentials

The Cyprus Ambassador to Germany, Mr Christos Psilogenis, presented his credentials yesterday to the President of Poland Mr Aleksander Kwasniewski, as Cyprus' new Ambassador to Poland based in Berlin.

Accepting the credentials, the Polish President showed particular interest in Cyprus developments and reiterated his country's support for a peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem within the framework of the United Nations' resolutions and principles.
