[01] Government has been assured there are no nuclear weapons in British BasesCyprus' Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said on 2 January that the Republic of Cyprus was in a position to confirm that there are no nuclear weapons in British Bases in Cyprus."Both the authorities of the British Bases and the British Government assure us that there are no nuclear weapons on Cyprus and the Government is now in a position to cross-check this information", he said. "From what we are in a position to know today there are no nuclear weapons in the British Bases", he added. Mr Papapetrou also expressed the government's concern that the Bases were used to store nuclear bombs during the Cold War. "I would like to say that the fact that in the past nuclear weapons were deployed on Cyprus causes concern to the people and the Government of Cyprus. This is how the situation has always been and obviously Cyprus is not pleased when nuclear weapons are deployed on Cyprus or our region," he said.
